  • Healthy rhizome. Firm, thick, white or cream-colored. Feels like a jicama or lotus root. If your rhizome looks and feels like this throughout, the yellowing has a different cause.
  • Early rhizome rot. Some sections of the rhizome are soft, brown, and mushy while other sections are still firm and white. Recoverable if you trim the damaged sections.

04 · EARLY-STAGE RECOVERY

How to save a partially-rotted snake plant

If the rhizome has some healthy firm white sections and some rotted brown-mushy sections, recovery is likely with these steps:

Step 1 — Trim aggressively. Use clean sharp shears to cut away all damaged rhizome tissue. Cut back to firm white healthy tissue. Better to remove too much than too little — any rot left behind will spread. Remove any leaves attached to rotted sections (they can be used for propagation later).
