Sooty Mold: What It Is and What It's Telling You
Sooty mold is the black, dusty, slightly greasy film that appears on houseplant leaves and then refuses to be explained by anything you have done to the plant. You did not overwater it. You did not splash the foliage. The soil is fine. And yet there it is, coating the upper surfaces of the leaves like a thin layer of soot from a chimney. The reason it makes no sense as a disease is that it is not one. Sooty mold is a complex of saprophytic fungi that grow on honeydew — the sugary liquid excreted by sap-sucking insects — and it never infects living plant tissue at all[1][2]. That single fact changes the entire treatment. This guide explains what sooty mold is, how to confirm it in under a minute, how to tell it apart from powdery mildew, dust and leaf spot disease, and — the part that actually matters — how to find the insect that is feeding it.
Sooty mold is a symptom, not a disease. It is a group of harmless surface fungi that colonise honeydew excreted by aphids, scale, mealybugs or whiteflies. It never penetrates leaf tissue — it harms the plant only by blocking light and reducing photosynthesis. Confirm it by wiping: sooty mold lifts off and leaves healthy green tissue beneath. Then find the insect, which may be on the plant, on a plant on a shelf above, or on a tree outside the window. Kill the insect and the honeydew supply stops, the mold dries and flakes away. Cleaning the mold without finding the insect is a waste of an afternoon.
01 · THE SHORT ANSWER
What sooty mold actually is
Sooty mold is not one organism. It is a loose assemblage of dark-pigmented fungi — genera such as Capnodium, Fumago, Cladosporium and Scorias, depending on climate and host — that share one habit: they live on sugary deposits rather than on plants[1][13]. They are saprophytes, meaning they feed on dead or non-living organic material. They have no mechanism for entering a leaf. They produce no haustoria, no infection pegs, no toxins. They simply spread a mat of heavily melanised hyphae across whatever sticky surface is available.
The sticky surface, indoors, is almost always honeydew. Aphids, soft scale, mealybugs and whiteflies all feed by inserting a needle-like stylet into the plant's phloem and drinking sap under pressure. Phloem sap is overwhelmingly sugar and very dilute in nitrogen, so to obtain enough protein the insect must process enormous volumes of liquid and excrete the excess sugar almost unchanged[3][14]. That excreted sugar solution rains down onto everything below, and airborne fungal spores — which are always present — land on it and grow.
This is why sooty mold behaves so oddly. It appears on upper leaf surfaces, not lower ones, because that is where falling honeydew lands. It appears on windowsills, saucers, table tops, floors and pot rims as readily as on leaves, because those surfaces catch honeydew too. It sometimes appears on a plant that has no visible insect whatsoever, because the insect is on a plant directly above it. A fungal pathogen would never distribute itself that way. Gravity is doing the work.
The damage sooty mold causes is real but strictly indirect. A dense mat of black fungus over a leaf blade intercepts light before it reaches the chloroplasts, which reduces photosynthetic rate[2][15]. Heavy, long-standing coatings on a plant already in a dim room can push it into a slow decline, with older leaves yellowing and dropping. It can also raise leaf temperature slightly and impede gas exchange around the stomata. But it does this the way a dirty window does it — by shading, not by infecting.

02 · CONFIRMING IT
How to confirm it is sooty mold in one minute
You do not need a microscope. Sooty mold has three properties that no true leaf pathogen shares, and all three can be checked with a damp cloth and a good light.
It wipes off. Take a soft cloth dampened with plain water and draw it firmly across a coated leaf. Sooty mold releases in a smeary black film, transferring visibly to the cloth. It may take two or three passes on an old, thick colony, and a drop of mild dish soap helps, but it comes away. A fungal or bacterial leaf spot will not wipe off, because the discoloured tissue is the leaf.
It sits on the surface. Look at a coated leaf edge-on under a bright light. Sooty mold reads as a distinct layer lying on top of the cuticle, sometimes lifting at the margins like flaking paint when it dries. On thick, glossy leaves you can occasionally peel a whole sheet of it off intact. Pathogens are embedded in the tissue and have no separate layer to lift.
The tissue beneath is unharmed. This is the decisive test. After wiping, the leaf underneath should be normal green, firm, and unblemished — no browning, no yellow halo, no sunken lesion, no dead patch matching the shape of the coating. Occasionally a very long-standing colony leaves the tissue underneath slightly paler than the rest of the leaf, which is a light-deprivation effect and greens up again over a few weeks. If instead you uncover a dead brown patch, you are not looking at sooty mold.
One more confirmation worth doing: check whether the leaf is sticky before you wipe. Run a fingertip across an uncoated leaf lower down, or across the shelf, saucer or floor beneath the plant. Honeydew feels tacky, like a very thin film of syrup, and picks up dust and lint. Finding stickiness confirms the insect diagnosis immediately, even if you have not yet found the insect itself.

03 · THE LOOK-ALIKES
Sooty mold vs powdery mildew, dust and leaf spot
Four things commonly get mistaken for one another on indoor foliage. They demand completely different responses, and two of them require no treatment of the plant at all, so the distinction is worth ten seconds of attention.
01 · Sooty mold
Black, on top, wipes off
Dark grey to black, slightly greasy, on upper surfaces and on furniture below. Wipes away cleanly. Tissue beneath is healthy. Means a sap-sucking insect is present somewhere above.
02 · Powdery mildew
White, and it is alive
White to pale grey, dry and floury, in expanding circular patches on both leaf surfaces. Rubs off but regrows from tissue it has infected. A true pathogen: needs an actual fungicide or cultural control.
03 · Household dust
Grey, dry, not sticky
Even grey film on horizontal surfaces, no stickiness underneath, no black smear on the cloth. Removed permanently with one wipe and does not return in days. Only shades the leaf.
04 · Leaf spot disease
Discrete, and it does not move
Defined spots, often brown or tan with a yellow halo or dark border, sometimes water-soaked. Cannot be wiped off because the damaged tissue is the leaf. Needs sanitation and drier foliage.
The mildew confusion is the most consequential, because it sends people reaching for fungicide when the answer is insecticidal soap. Colour is the first separator: sooty mold is dark, powdery mildew is pale. Distribution is the second: powdery mildew starts as discrete circular colonies that enlarge and merge, and it happily colonises the undersides of leaves and young stems, while sooty mold follows the drip pattern of falling honeydew and is heaviest on horizontal upper surfaces[4][5]. Persistence is the third: wipe both away and only mildew comes back on the same leaf, because only mildew is anchored in tissue.
Dust is separated by feel, not by sight. Both dust and sooty mold form grey-to-black films on upper leaf surfaces of plants near a window. Only sooty mold sits on a tacky base, and only sooty mold reappears within a week or two of cleaning. If a leaf is clean-feeling underneath the film and stays clean for a month after wiping, it was dust.

04 · THE FOUR CULPRITS
Which insects produce honeydew indoors
Only phloem feeders produce honeydew, which narrows the suspect list dramatically. Spider mites, thrips, fungus gnats and springtails do not cause sooty mold. Four groups do, and each leaves a different signature[3][6].
- Soft scale — the most common indoor cause. Immobile brown or tan bumps, 2–5 mm, clamped along stems, midribs and leaf undersides. They look like part of the plant, which is why they get missed for months. Soft scales are prolific honeydew producers; armoured scales are not, so a sticky plant with bumps means soft scale. - Mealybugs — white cotton in the tight spots. Soft, oval, covered in white waxy fluff, hiding in leaf axils, on new growth, under the pot rim and in the root zone. They move slowly but they do move. A plant with white fuzz in its joints and stickiness on the leaves below has mealybugs, essentially by definition.
- Aphids — fast, clustered, on the softest growth. Pear-shaped, green, black, pink or grey, in dense colonies on flower stalks, buds and the newest shoot tips. They reproduce explosively and shed pale cast skins that stick to the honeydew, which is a useful confirmatory clue. Full detail in aphids on houseplants.
- Whiteflies — the ones that fly up when you touch the plant. Tiny white moth-like adults on leaf undersides, with translucent scale-like nymphs fixed alongside them. Disturb the plant and a small cloud lifts and resettles. Whitefly honeydew tends to be finely distributed, producing a diffuse haze of sooty mold rather than concentrated drips.
There is one non-insect cause worth ruling out. Some plants produce their own sugary exudate. Certain Hoya, Ficus and orchid species secrete nectar from extrafloral nectaries on flower stalks and young growth, and a few plants push out sap through guttation at leaf margins. That sugar can support sooty mold with no insect involved at all. The tell is location: exudate-driven mold sits at the specific gland or leaf tip, is tightly localised and stops when the plant stops secreting, whereas insect honeydew is scattered over broad areas and onto surfaces below.

05 · THE SEARCH
Finding the insect — including on plants above
This is the step people skip, and skipping it is why sooty mold keeps coming back. Because honeydew falls, the mold is always at or below the insect, never above it. Search upward from the mold, not outward from it.
Start with the affected plant itself, in good light and with a hand lens or your phone camera zoomed in. Work systematically: turn every leaf over and check the underside, especially along the midrib and the major veins. Check every leaf axil where petiole meets stem. Check the growing tips and any flower buds. Check the stem right down to soil level, and check the underside of the pot rim and the top inch of the mix, where mealybugs shelter. Scale on a woody stem is easy to miss because it is the same colour as the bark — run a thumbnail along the stem and feel for bumps rather than looking for them.
If the affected plant is genuinely clean, look up. Sooty mold on a plant with no insect on it is one of the most reliable signals in indoor plant care, and it means the source is overhead. Common overhead sources, roughly in order of frequency:
A hanging or shelved plant directly above. A trailing pothos or a hanging fern on a bracket above the affected plant is the classic case. Honeydew drips straight down. Take the upper plant down and inspect it as thoroughly as you inspected the lower one.
A larger specimen whose canopy overhangs. A big ficus or dracaena three feet away may still have leaves extending over a small plant on a side table. Its lower foliage may look fine while an infestation sits at head height in the upper canopy.
A tree or shrub outside the window. This one catches everybody. Aphids and soft scale on limes, maples, tulip trees, birches and many other outdoor species produce spectacular quantities of honeydew that drifts in through an open window or is carried in on air movement, coating windowsills, the outside of the glass and any plant on the sill[6][11]. If the windowsill itself and the frame are sticky, and cars or paving outside are sticky too, the source is outdoors and no amount of treating your houseplant will fix it. Close the window, move the plant, and wash the sill.
The surfaces themselves. Before concluding anything, wipe a shelf, a table top and a section of floor beneath the affected plant with a clean white cloth. Where the stickiness is heaviest tells you where the drip zone is, and the drip zone points straight up at the culprit. This is a two-minute test that saves hours.
Finally, when you find the insect, assume it is not alone. Sap-suckers spread by crawling to touching foliage and by riding air currents, so inspect every plant within arm's reach of the infested one and isolate the infested plant while you treat it. A single missed mealybug on a neighbouring pot restarts the entire cycle in six weeks.
06 · THE SEQUENCE
Treat the cause, then clean — in that order
The order matters more than the products. Clean first and you will be cleaning again in a fortnight, because the honeydew tap is still running. Treat first and the mold is already dying by the time you get to it.
Step one: isolate. Move the infested plant away from the others, ideally into a different room, and check its immediate former neighbours before you do anything else.
Step two: reduce the population physically. Prune out any stem or leaf that is heavily encrusted — this removes hundreds of insects instantly and is faster than treating them. Scrape soft scale off with a thumbnail or an old toothbrush. Dab individual mealybugs with a cotton bud dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol, which dissolves their protective wax. Rinse aphids off a sturdy plant in the shower or under a tap.
Step three: treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Both work by contact — soap disrupts the insect cuticle, oil smothers — so complete coverage is everything. Spray until every surface is wet, particularly leaf undersides, axils and stems[7][8]. Neither has residual activity, so repeat every 5–7 days for at least three or four applications to catch eggs and crawlers as they hatch. Test on one leaf first and wait 48 hours: ferns, some palms and certain succulents are sensitive, and never spray oil onto a plant that is wilted, in direct sun, or in a hot room.
Step four: confirm the honeydew has stopped. Wipe a leaf and a shelf clean, then check again in five to seven days. If nothing is sticky, the insects are controlled. If the tackiness has returned, you missed some — go back and search again, including overhead. This is the checkpoint that separates a fix from a relapse.
Step five: only now, clean the mold. Warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap on a soft cloth removes it well. Support each leaf with one hand and wipe with the other, working from the base of the leaf outward, and take two or three passes rather than scrubbing hard enough to abrade the cuticle. Rinse with plain water afterwards so no soap residue remains. For a large plant with hundreds of leaves, a lukewarm shower does most of the work. Left alone, sooty mold does eventually dry, crack and flake off by itself once its food supply ends[1][9], but cleaning restores photosynthesis immediately, which matters for a plant that has been shaded for months.
Do not use fungicides. Sooty mold fungi are not infecting the plant, and a fungicide addresses neither the mold's food supply nor the insect creating it. Do not use bleach, vinegar, undiluted alcohol or commercial furniture polish on foliage; all of them risk damaging the cuticle, and leaf shine products in particular can clog stomata. Finally, wash the surroundings — the shelf, sill, saucer, floor and pot — because honeydew there will keep growing mold long after the plant is clean.
07 · PREVENTION
Keeping sooty mold from coming back
Preventing sooty mold means preventing honeydew, which means preventing sap-sucking insects. Nothing you do to the fungus is prevention.
Quarantine every new plant for three to four weeks. The overwhelming majority of indoor scale and mealybug infestations arrive on a purchased plant, often as invisible eggs or first-instar crawlers that only become obvious weeks later. Keep new arrivals in a separate room and inspect them weekly before they join the collection.
Make the wipe test a habit. Once a month, run a finger across a shelf under each plant. Stickiness is detectable weeks before you can see either the insect or the mold, and a five-insect problem is trivially easy compared to a five-hundred-insect problem.
Do not over-fertilise. High-nitrogen feeding produces soft, sappy growth with elevated amino acid concentrations in the phloem, which measurably increases aphid and scale reproduction rates[10][14]. Feed at label rate during active growth and stop through the low-light months.
Keep plants generally vigorous. Stressed plants get infested faster and recover slower, and the two commonest indoor stressors are inadequate light and erratic watering. Clean leaves regularly. Wiping foliage every month or two removes dust, removes early honeydew before it can support a fungal colony, and forces you to look closely at every leaf — which is how infestations get caught early.
