Mealybugs on Houseplants: How to Get Rid of Them

Mealybugs are the houseplant pest that survives everything you throw at them, and the reason is chemistry rather than luck. They are soft scale insects in the family Pseudococcidae, and each one carries a protective coating of water-repellent wax that sheds ordinary water-based sprays before those sprays ever reach the animal underneath[1][2]. Add their habit of hiding in leaf axils, under leaf edges, inside furled new growth and even down among the roots, and you have a pest that shrugs off casual treatment and reappears three weeks later looking like it never left. This guide covers identification, why the wax matters so much, the alcohol-swab protocol that actually works, how long you have to keep it up, and when to accept that a plant is not worth saving.

Mealybugs look like small white cottony blobs tucked into leaf axils, along stems and on leaf undersides. They excrete sticky honeydew, which grows black sooty mould. Their waxy coating repels water-based sprays, so the standard spot treatment is 70% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud, dabbed directly onto every individual. 01 · THE SHORT ANSWER

How do you get rid of mealybugs?

You get rid of mealybugs by touching every single one with 70% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud, then backing that up with a thorough insecticidal soap or horticultural oil application, and repeating the pair weekly for four to six weeks[1][3]. Isolate the plant first, because mealybugs walk to neighbouring pots.

Alcohol is the workhorse for a specific mechanical reason: it dissolves and penetrates the waxy coating that water simply beads off. Dab a mealybug with alcohol and the white fluff collapses and the insect dies within seconds. The visible sign of success is immediate — the blob turns translucent orange-brown. Alcohol has no residual activity at all, which is why it is a spot treatment rather than a programme on its own.

The repeat schedule is where most people fail. Females lay several hundred eggs in a cottony ovisac, and the newly hatched crawlers are tiny, mobile, barely waxed and easy to miss. They hatch over a period of days to weeks and disperse into exactly the crevices you cannot see into. Treating once removes the adults you found and leaves the next generation intact.

02 · IDENTIFICATION

What mealybugs look like and what they leave behind

Adult female mealybugs are oval, soft-bodied insects roughly 3–5 mm long, covered in a white or greyish mealy wax with short waxy filaments around the margin. They move slowly but they do move, which distinguishes them from armoured scale. There are four things to look for, and any one of them is enough to start treating.

White waxy deposits on roots and the inner pot wall, on a plant that declines with nothing visible above soil.

Mealybugs feed by inserting stylets into phloem and drawing off sap. On a lightly infested plant the effect is subtle: slightly slowed growth, occasional yellowing. As numbers build you get stunted, distorted new leaves, general chlorosis, leaf drop and eventually dieback of shoots[2][4]. Some species also inject saliva that causes localised distortion out of proportion to the number of insects present.

Honeydew is often the first thing people actually notice, usually as an unexplained sticky patch on a windowsill or a shelf under a plant. Follow it upward. Whatever is above that patch is being fed on. The sooty mould that then colonises the honeydew is a separate, non-parasitic fungus — it does not attack the plant, it just grows on the sugar and shades the leaf[5]. It wipes off with a damp cloth once the mealybugs are gone.

Do not confuse mealybug wax with the harmless white saprophytic fungus that sometimes blooms on damp potting mix — that is a soil-surface moisture issue covered in white mold on houseplant soil, not a pest. Mealybug wax is on the plant, is discrete and blob-shaped, and if you nudge it with a pin, something underneath moves.

03 · THE WAX PROBLEM

Why ordinary spraying does almost nothing

The white coating is not camouflage. Mealybugs secrete it continuously from glands across the body surface, and it is a hydrophobic barrier — a physical, water-repelling shield[1][6]. Spray a water-based product at one and the droplets bead and roll off. The active ingredient never contacts the cuticle, so nothing happens. People then reasonably conclude the product does not work, when the real failure was one of delivery.

70% isopropyl alcohol solves this because it is a solvent for the wax and it has far lower surface tension than water, so it wets and penetrates rather than beading. It kills on contact, essentially instantly, by dissolving the protective layer and desiccating the insect underneath. Insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils help for related reasons: surfactants and oils both break surface tension and spread, and oils smother by physically blocking respiration.

A note on concentration: 70% is the standard because it penetrates better than 90–99%, which evaporates too fast, and it is strong enough to breach the wax. Even so, it can mark thin, hairy or waxy-cuticled foliage, so test a single leaf and wait 24 hours before treating a whole plant, and avoid applying it in direct sun.

Position is the other half of the problem. Mealybugs deliberately shelter in leaf axils, in the crease where petiole meets stem, under leaf sheaths, inside unfurled new growth, beneath the pot rim and along the top of the soil — all places a spray in a straight line from above never reaches. Even a properly formulated product will fail if it cannot physically land on the insect. That is why manual, individual treatment with a swab comes first and spraying comes second.

04 · ROOT MEALYBUGS

The infestation you cannot see

Some mealybug species live entirely below the soil line, feeding on roots and the root crown[7]. Root mealybugs are a classic explanation for a plant that declines steadily — pale, stunted, wilting despite adequate water — while inspection of the foliage turns up nothing at all. They are common on cacti and succulents but occur on foliage plants too.

Diagnosis means unpotting. Slide the rootball out and look at the outer surface and the inside wall of the pot: root mealybugs show as small white insects among the roots, often with patches of white waxy deposit that look like scattered mould or a dusting of flour, sometimes with fine white filaments running through the mix. The wax stays visible even where the insects have moved on.

Treatment is more invasive. Wash all the old mix off the roots under running water, trim away dead or badly damaged root tissue, and if the plant will tolerate it, dip or drench the roots in insecticidal soap solution at label rate. Repot into completely fresh mix in a new or thoroughly scrubbed pot — reusing the old mix or an unwashed pot reintroduces the infestation on day one. Discard the old mix outside rather than in an indoor bin.

Because root mealybug symptoms overlap almost exactly with root disease, check both while the plant is out of its pot. Healthy roots are firm and pale; roots that are brown, soft and sloughing point to the problem described in identifying and treating root rot. It is entirely possible to have both, since root feeding damage opens entry points for opportunistic pathogens.

05 · THE PROTOCOL

The alcohol-swab routine, week by week

Set aside a proper block of time for the first session. Mealybug treatment is slow, physical and boring, and it is the thoroughness of that first pass that determines how long the rest takes.

  • Step 1 — isolate immediately and cut the worst growth. Move the plant to a different room, not just a different shelf; crawlers walk between touching pots and along surfaces. Check every plant that has been within reach of it. Prune out shoots and leaves that are heavily colonised or badly distorted and bag them straight away rather than leaving cuttings on the side.
  • Step 2 — dab every individual with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Work leaf by leaf with cotton buds under good light, using a hand lens if you have one. Press into every leaf axil, the join of petiole and stem, the underside of every leaf, unfurling new growth, the growing tip, the stem base, the top of the soil and the underside of the pot rim. Each mealybug should visibly collapse and turn brown. Change buds often, and do not skip the pot itself.
  • Step 3 — follow with a full soap or oil application. Alcohol only kills what you touched, so immediately after swabbing, spray the entire plant with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil at label rate, wetting undersides, axils and stems until they drip. This catches the crawlers you never saw. Avoid direct sun, do not treat a wilted plant, and spot-test sensitive foliage first.
  • Step 4 — repeat weekly for four to six weeks, then verify. Run steps 2 and 3 every seven days without exception, even in a week when you find nothing. Eggs and crawlers are hidden in crevices and hatch over an extended period, so treatments must continue past the point where the plant looks clean. Only rejoin the plant to your collection after three consecutive clean weekly inspections, and keep checking it monthly for a further few months.

While you are working, wash the outside and rim of the pot, wipe the shelf or windowsill with soapy water, and clean any tools between plants. Mealybug crawlers survive off-plant for a while and are easily carried on hands, cloths and secateurs.

06 · WHY IT TAKES WEEKS

The crawler stage is what you are really fighting

A mealybug generation indoors typically takes something like six to eight weeks from egg to reproducing adult, varying with species and temperature[2][8]. Females of most species deposit several hundred eggs into a fluffy white ovisac, and those eggs hatch over a spread of days rather than all at once. The first-instar nymphs — crawlers — are the dispersal stage: pale, only lightly waxed, under a millimetre long, and mobile enough to walk to a neighbouring plant.

Crawlers are simultaneously the most vulnerable stage, because their wax layer is thin, and the hardest to find, because they are nearly invisible and they settle in crevices. That combination is exactly why weekly treatment for four to six weeks is the standard recommendation. Each round catches the crawlers that emerged since the last one, while they are still susceptible and before they mature and lay.

The classic failure pattern is predictable: swab thoroughly, see no mealybugs for two weeks, congratulate yourself, stop. Three weeks later the plant is covered again, because an entire cohort of eggs hatched into an untreated plant. Any absence of visible mealybugs before four weeks of consecutive treatment is provisional, not proof.

A last point on the ants that sometimes accompany them. Ants farm mealybugs for honeydew and actively protect them from predators and parasitoids, and they will move them between plants. If ants are visiting your pots, dealing with the ant trail is part of dealing with the mealybugs[9].

07 · WHEN TO GIVE UP

Knowing when to discard the plant

This is unpopular advice and it is still correct. A heavily infested plant is a permanent reservoir that reinfests everything around it, and the effort of clearing it can far exceed the value of the plant. Discard rather than treat when several of the following are true.

The infestation is generalised rather than localised. Mealybugs on most leaves, throughout the crown and along the stems, rather than a handful in a few axils, means you will not reach them all and the plant is already heavily weakened.

The architecture makes access impossible. Densely branched plants, tight rosettes, plants with sheathing leaf bases and anything with hundreds of small leaves cannot realistically be swabbed individually. Ferns and some succulents fall squarely into this category.

You have treated properly for six weeks with no clear decline. If a genuinely thorough weekly programme has not visibly reduced numbers over a full generation, further rounds are unlikely to change the outcome.

The plant is common, cheap and easily replaced. Weigh six weeks of weekly swabbing against the price of a healthy specimen, and the risk to the rest of your collection while the infested one is in the house.

There is a middle option worth remembering. If part of the plant is clean, take cuttings from unaffected growth, inspect them under a lens, wash them, treat them once as a precaution, root them separately and discard the parent. You keep the plant and lose the infestation. When discarding, bag the whole thing including the soil, seal it, and put it in an outdoor bin — then scrub the pot, the saucer and the surface it stood on.

08 · PREVENTION

Quarantine is the only prevention that works

Almost every mealybug outbreak walks through the front door on a new plant. They are easy to miss at the point of sale because a handful tucked into leaf axils on a dense plant is genuinely invisible on a shop shelf, and because a plant can carry eggs and crawlers with no adult in sight. Nothing you do to your existing plants prevents that; only inspecting new arrivals does.

Quarantine every new plant for four to six weeks — longer than for most pests, because of the slow generation time. Keep it in a separate room, inspect leaf axils, undersides, stem joints and the pot rim weekly under good light, and unpot anything that declines without visible cause so you can check for root mealybugs. Beyond that, build inspection into your routine. Every time you water, glance into two or three leaf axils. Space plants so leaves are not permanently touching, which is how crawlers travel. Wipe honeydew and dust off foliage. And keep plants unstressed — consistently watered, appropriately lit, not over-fertilised, since lush nitrogen-rich growth is particularly attractive to sap feeders.
