If you have lost three plants in a row and concluded that you simply do not have the knack, here is the good news: you almost certainly do not have a talent problem. You have a small number of very specific and very fixable habits, and the same six of them account for nearly every houseplant death in nearly every home[1][8]. Nobody is born knowing them, and none of them are intuitive — several of them are the exact opposite of what caring for a plant feels like it should involve. Six causes explain almost every houseplant death: overwatering (by far the most common — it kills by filling soil pores with water so roots suffocate, not by “too much water” as such), not enough light, the wrong plant for your conditions, pots with no drainage hole, inconsistent attention that swings between drought and flood, and pests arriving unnoticed on a new plant. None of them require a green thumb to fix. They require a drainage hole, a brighter spot, a finger in the soil before you water, and two weeks of quarantine for anything new.
01 · THE SHORT ANSWER
Why do my houseplants keep dying?
The single most likely answer is that you are watering them too often, in a pot that cannot drain, in a spot that is darker than it looks. Those three things compound: dim light means the plant uses water slowly, a pot without a hole means the water cannot leave, and a weekly watering schedule keeps topping it up. The plant drowns over several weeks while looking, for most of that time, entirely fine.
This is why houseplant failure feels so mysterious and so unfair. The damage happens underground and out of sight, and by the time the leaves react — yellowing, drooping, dropping — the roots have been in trouble for weeks. Worse, the visible symptoms of a drowned plant look almost identical to those of a thirsty one, so the instinctive response is to water more, which accelerates the decline. It genuinely is counter-intuitive. It is not a reflection of your competence.
The encouraging part is how few variables actually matter. Plants are not delicate machines needing constant tuning. They need light, air at the roots, water when the soil has dried, and a container that lets the excess out. Get those four right and most common houseplants are genuinely difficult to kill. The six causes below are simply the six ways those basics most often go wrong.

02 · CAUSE ONE
Overwatering — and why it kills by suffocation
Overwatering is the single most common cause of houseplant death, and it is worth being precise about the mechanism, because the name is misleading[2][8]. Water is not poisonous to roots. What kills is what water displaces.
Healthy potting mix is roughly half solid particles and half pore space, and that pore space holds a mixture of water and air. Roots are living tissue that respires aerobically, exactly as your own cells do: they take in oxygen and burn sugars to release the energy that powers growth and the active transport of mineral nutrients into the plant[12][15]. When you water too often, those pores stay filled with water and never refill with air. Oxygen diffuses through water roughly ten thousand times more slowly than through air, so the roots run out within a day or two of continuous saturation.
What follows is a chain rather than an event. First the roots lose the energy to take up water — which is why a drowning plant wilts, and why wilting so often gets treated with more water. Then root tissue begins to die. Then soil-dwelling water moulds such as Pythium and Phytophthora, which are present in ordinary potting mix and thrive in saturated conditions, colonise the weakened roots and the decay accelerates[4]. The fix is not “water less.” It is water less often, but thoroughly. Push a finger two or three centimetres into the mix. If it is damp, walk away and check again in a few days. If it is dry, water slowly and evenly until liquid runs freely from the drainage holes, then let the pot drain fully and pour away anything sitting in the saucer. This gives roots a wet phase and a re-aerated phase, which is exactly the cycle they evolved for. 03 · CAUSE TWO
Not enough light — a slower death, but just as certain
Light is the second great killer, and it is stealthier than overwatering because the decline takes months rather than weeks. Indoors, light is almost always the resource in shortest supply[3][13]. Everything a plant builds is made from carbon it fixes during photosynthesis, and photosynthesis runs on light. Below a certain intensity the plant burns more sugar in respiration than it fixes, and it slowly consumes itself: leaves thin, drop from the bottom up, and are not replaced.
The reason this catches everyone out is that human vision is a terrible light meter. Your eyes adapt so smoothly that a corner receiving a tiny fraction of window light still registers as a perfectly bright room. A plant standing three metres back from a window is in a fundamentally different world from one on the sill, even though both spots look fine to you.
Low light also multiplies the overwatering problem, which is why the two so often kill together. A plant in dim conditions transpires slowly, so its soil stays wet for far longer — sometimes two or three times as long as the same plant in a bright spot. If you water on a fixed weekly schedule, the dim-corner plant is being watered long before it has used what it already has. The remedy costs nothing. Move plants closer to windows, clean the glass, keep blinds open through the day, and rotate pots a quarter turn weekly so they grow evenly rather than leaning. If your home really is dark, that is a constraint worth designing around rather than fighting: choose species that tolerate it, or add a simple grow light on a timer for ten to twelve hours a day.

04 · CAUSE THREE
The wrong plant for the conditions you actually have
A great many houseplant deaths are decided at the shop, before the plant ever reaches your home. Buying on appearance and then hoping the room will suit it is the single most common way beginners set themselves up for failure — and it is not really a care mistake at all, it is a matching mistake[5][10].
Two mismatches cause most of the trouble. The first is buying a sun-loving plant for a dark flat: cacti, most succulents, citrus and many flowering plants need genuinely bright conditions and will stretch, weaken and rot in a north-facing room no matter how carefully you water. The second is buying a plant whose humidity or precision requirements exceed what an ordinary heated home offers — certain ferns, carnivorous plants and some prayer plants are unforgiving of dry winter air and of tap water, and they are frequently sold to complete beginners as easy.
It also helps to know that “low light” on a plant label is a marketing term, not a horticultural one. It generally means “tolerates less light than average without dying quickly” — it never means “grows well in a dim corner.” Every plant grows better with more light than its label minimum; tolerance is survival, not thriving.
Start from the room, not the plant. Work out how much light each spot actually receives, then pick species that suit it. If you have been losing plants steadily, spend a season with the genuinely forgiving ones — pothos, snake plants, ZZ plants, spider plants, cast iron plants, philodendrons — and build your confidence on plants that tolerate a mistake or two. There is no rule saying you have to earn your way up to them.

05 · CAUSE FOUR
Pots without drainage holes
This one is almost embarrassingly easy to fix, and it quietly kills an enormous number of plants. A pot with no drainage hole has no way to let excess water leave. Water accumulates in the bottom, the lowest portion of the rootball sits permanently saturated with no air at all, and the roots there suffocate and rot — the same mechanism as overwatering, but now built into the container itself and impossible to correct by watering habits alone[6][9].
The popular workaround makes things worse rather than better. Adding a layer of gravel, pebbles or broken crocks at the bottom does not create drainage and does not create a reservoir below the roots. Because of how water tension works at the boundary between fine mix and coarse material, water will not move down into the gravel until the mix above it is fully saturated. The practical effect is that the saturated zone is pushed upward, deeper into the rootball, which is the opposite of what you wanted[11][14].
The right answer is either to drill a hole, or to use the decorative pot as a cachepot. Keep the plant in a plain nursery pot with holes, slip that inside the attractive container, and lift it out to water at the sink. Let it drain completely for a few minutes, then put it back. Nothing about your decor changes and the fundamental problem disappears.
Two related habits are worth breaking at the same time. Never leave a pot standing in a saucer full of water — tip it out within about half an hour, because the effect is identical to having no drainage. And do not pot a small plant into a very large container: excess mix holds water the small root system cannot use, and it stays wet for weeks. Pot up by one modest size at a time.
06 · CAUSES FIVE AND SIX
Inconsistent attention, and pests you never saw arrive
Cause five is the rhythm of care rather than any single act. Plants are damaged less by imperfect watering than by wildly variable watering. The classic pattern is three weeks of forgetting followed by a guilty flood, then another three weeks of neglect. Each hard dry-out kills the fine root hairs that do most of the actual absorbing, and each flood then saturates a diminished root system that cannot use the water[7]. The plant spends everything it has rebuilding roots and never gets ahead. A plant watered adequately but consistently will outperform one watered perfectly but erratically.
Consistency does not mean a rigid calendar — a plant's needs change hugely between July and January. It means a consistent check. Pick one day a week, walk round with a finger, and water only the pots that are dry. That habit takes four minutes and prevents most of the drought-and-flood cycle without any expertise at all.
Cause six arrives through your own front door. Most infestations are not spontaneous; they come in on a new plant, on a plant that summered outdoors, or occasionally in a bag of potting mix. Nursery plants are grown in warm, dense, humid conditions that suit spider mites, mealybugs, scale, thrips and fungus gnats perfectly, and a small population is easy to miss on a crowded shelf. Left unnoticed, it spreads to everything nearby over a couple of months[8].
- Inspect before you buy. Turn leaves over and look at the undersides and the leaf axils. Fine webbing, sticky residue, white cottony specks or small brown bumps are all reasons to leave the plant at the shop.
- Quarantine new arrivals for two to four weeks. Keep anything new physically separate from your other plants. Most infestations become visible within that window, and containing one plant is far easier than treating twelve.
- Check the undersides monthly. Nearly every common houseplant pest feeds on the underside of leaves or in the crevices where leaves meet stems. Two minutes with a torch catches problems while they are still small.
- Treat early and repeatedly. Wipe with soapy water or use an appropriate horticultural soap or oil, and repeat weekly for several cycles — most treatments do not kill eggs, so a single application always fails.
One pest deserves a special mention because it is both the most common and the most misunderstood: fungus gnats. The little black flies are harmless, but their presence is a direct signal that your soil surface is staying wet for too long, because their larvae need a consistently moist top layer to develop. Four habit changes that prevent most houseplant deaths
You do not need to fix all six causes at once, and you do not need to learn anything complicated. These four changes take about an hour in total to implement and between them address every mechanism described above.
01 · Before watering
Check, don't schedule
Finger two centimetres into the mix every time. Damp means wait. This one habit prevents the most common cause of houseplant death.
02 · Every pot
Give it a hole
Drill one, or keep the plant in a nursery pot inside the decorative one. Empty the saucer within half an hour, every time.
03 · Placement
Move it closer
Nearly every indoor plant wants more light than it is getting. Closer to the window, clean glass, blinds open through the day.
04 · New plants
Quarantine for a month
Keep anything new apart from your collection for two to four weeks and check leaf undersides weekly before introducing it.
