01 · THE REAL PROBLEM
Intermittent visits, not insufficient water
Allotment gardeners rarely under-water in total volume. What goes wrong is the distribution. A plot that receives a heavy soak on Saturday and nothing until the following Saturday delivers a week’s worth of water in a few hours, most of which either runs off the surface, drains past the root zone, or evaporates from wet soil in the first 24–48 hours[3].
The crops then experience exactly the pattern that causes the classic allotment failures: split tomatoes and carrots, blossom end rot on tomatoes and courgettes, bolting in lettuce and spinach, and bitter cucumbers — all of them associated with fluctuating rather than steady soil moisture[4][5].
Many sites also make surface watering harder than it needs to be. Water may only be available from a communal standpipe or a tank, hosepipes may be banned or restricted, and a long carry with a can limits how much you can realistically apply. Under those conditions, the efficiency of the delivery method stops being an abstract virtue and becomes the difference between a crop and a failure.

The number people want is “how many days will one fill last?”, and the honest answer is that it depends on pot size, soil type, crop, and weather — because outflow is not fixed. Water crosses the clay wall down a water-potential gradient, so the drier the soil the faster the pot empties[15]. That self-regulation is the feature, but it also means the same pot lasts ten days in a cool damp week and three in a hot dry one.

03 · LAYOUT FOR A PLOT
Where to concentrate the pots
Very few plotholders can afford to olla a whole allotment, and you should not try. Concentrate the pots where irregular watering does the most damage and leave the rest to rain and occasional hand-watering.
- Prioritise the moisture-sensitive crops. Tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers, beans, and salad leaves suffer most from swings — blossom end rot, splitting, bitterness, and bolting all trace back to inconsistent moisture. These beds justify the pots.
- Skip the low-priority ground. Established perennials, autumn brassicas going into a wet season, and green manure areas do not need buffered irrigation. Neither do potatoes and onions once bulking is done.
- Group the pots for a fast refill round. Scattering them across the plot means a long walk with a heavy can. Cluster them into two or three beds so a refill circuit takes minutes, not half your visit.
- Install before planting and mulch afterwards. Bury the pots, backfill firmly so the clay contacts soil with no air gap, fill once to charge the soil, then plant. A surface mulch on top cuts evaporation further and stretches the buffer.

04 · BULK REFILLING
Filling twenty pots without losing your afternoon

Refilling is the one recurring task, so it should be the first thing you do on arrival, before weeding or harvesting. Do it while the plot is still shaded and cool if you can, and the pots have the whole afternoon to begin distributing.
With a hose, if permitted. A low-flow trickle into each neck is fastest — run down the line, hold a few seconds per pot, move on. Keep the flow gentle so you are not blasting soil into the opening or wetting the surface unnecessarily. With a watering can. Use a long, narrow spout with the rose removed so water goes into the neck rather than over the bed. Two cans carried together beats one carried twice. If the standpipe is far away, a wheelbarrow with a full butt or two large containers turns four trips into one.
With stored rainwater. Most allotment sites have shed guttering into a butt, and rainwater is the ideal olla supply: no chlorine, and much less mineral scale to gradually clog the clay wall than hard tap water. Fit a filter or a fine mesh over the butt outlet so debris does not end up inside the pots.
Cap every pot after filling. An open olla collects leaves and soil that clog the wall from inside and becomes standing water — an avoidable mosquito breeding site and an easy target for site complaints[7]. Do not put liquid feed into the pots; dissolved salts and organic residues slowly block the pores. Feed at the surface instead.
05 · SHARED-SITE ETIQUETTE
Labelling, neighbours, and not annoying the committee
On a shared site, other people walk past, work near, and occasionally onto your plot. A row of unexplained ceramic necks poking out of a bed invites curiosity, and curiosity on an allotment sometimes involves a boot.
Label them. A simple weatherproof marker — “Watering pot — please leave lid on” — solves most of it. It stops well-meaning neighbours lifting lids to look inside, and it stops anyone assuming a buried pot is rubbish to be cleared.
Mark them visibly. A short cane or a light-coloured lid beside each neck prevents the single most common damage: someone treading on a rim hidden under foliage. Terracotta cracks under a boot, and by August a squash canopy hides everything.
Tell your immediate neighbours. Two minutes of explanation converts a puzzled onlooker into someone who might top up your pots when you are away for a fortnight. Reciprocal watering arrangements are the oldest allotment institution there is, and ollas make them dramatically easier — asking a neighbour to pour water into six openings is a far smaller favour than asking them to water your whole plot properly.
Be realistic about theft and breakage. Ollas are buried, unglamorous, and awkward to remove, so they are a poor theft target compared with tools or hoses. Breakage from feet, forks, and rotavators is the real risk. Keep pots out of the paths, never rotavate a bed that has ollas in it without lifting them first, and accept that you will lose the occasional one to a careless spade — including your own.
06 · HONEST LIMITS
What ollas will not do for you
They will not germinate seed. Ollas wet the soil below the surface and leave the top half-inch dry, which is exactly where carrot, beetroot, parsnip, and salad seed sits. Direct sowing on a plot you visit twice a week remains hard; use transplants where you can, or sow just before a forecast wet spell and cover the row with fleece or a board.
They will not fully cover a heatwave. A mature courgette or tomato crop in 90°F weather can empty a pot in a couple of days. If your visits are weekly and a heatwave is forecast, either arrange a mid-week top-up with a neighbour or accept that some crops will check.
They are not free. An olla installation across two or three beds is a real upfront cost. It is a durable one — fired clay lasts many seasons with reasonable care — but plan the spend rather than buying two pots and wondering why the plot still dries out.
They need frost management. In a freezing climate, drain or lift the pots at the end of the season. Water inside buried terracotta expands as it freezes and cracks the wall, and a whole plot’s worth of ollas lost in one January is a genuinely annoying way to learn this[8].
None of that undermines the case. It just means treating ollas as what they are: a way to convert a once- or twice-weekly visit into something that resembles steady irrigation for the crops that care most about it. Combine them with heavy mulching, wind shelter, and crop choices suited to an irregularly watered plot, and the whole system works considerably better than any one part of it[9].
07 · A SEASON ON THE PLOT
Putting it together across the year
Early spring. Install or reinstall the pots as you prepare the beds. Backfill firmly, fill once, and let the soil charge before you plant. This is the only labour-heavy moment in the whole system.
Planting out. Set transplants within the wetted zone around each pot — roughly 12–18 inches in loam, less in sand. Water each transplant in by hand at the crown for the first week or two while its roots reach the plume.
Summer. Refill first, every visit, before anything else. Mulch heavily once the soil has warmed. Watch which pots empty fastest — that tells you where the plot dries hardest and where to add capacity next year.
Autumn and winter. Stop refilling as rainfall takes over. Before hard frost, lift the pots, empty and dry them, and store them in your shed or at home. Check for hairline cracks while you clean them, and brush off any mineral scale with a stiff brush and a dilute vinegar soak.
