How to Propagate a Monstera (Cutting + Node Guide)
Propagating a Monstera deliciosa is one of the most-attempted houseplant projects — and one of the most common failures. The reason: monstera propagation depends critically on the presence of a node, and cuttings without nodes will never root regardless of care[1][2].
Essential rule: a monstera cutting must include at least one node — the small brown/tan bump on the stem where a leaf or aerial root emerges. No node = no roots. Water propagation gives highest success (~90%); soil skips transplant but lower success (~70%); sphagnum moss balances both (~85%). Expect 4–8 weeks for water roots, 6–12 weeks for establishment.
01 · THE FUNDAMENTAL
Find the node first
Everything depends on this: the cutting must include a node. A node is the point where a leaf, aerial root, or new stem emerges — site of dormant meristem tissue that becomes new roots and new growth[3]. Cuttings without nodes cannot form roots. The leaf can stay alive for weeks in water, giving false hope, but no roots develop and the cutting eventually declines.
How to identify: Look at the main stem. You’ll see a small brown or tan bump or ring, often slightly swollen, at each point where a leaf emerges. This is the node. Above the node: the leaf’s petiole comes off one side; an aerial root often emerges from the node or nearby.
Node vs. petiole confusion: The most common propagation mistake is cutting off a leaf with a long petiole but no attached node. The node is on the main stem, and your cutting must include the section of main stem containing the node.

02 · TAKING THE CUTTING
The right cut technique
Step 1 — Sanitize tools. Sharp scissors or shears wiped with rubbing alcohol.
Step 2 — Locate cut points. Cut the main stem about 1/2 to 1 inch below the node. If possible, cut about 1 inch above the node too.
Step 3 — Make clean cuts at a slight angle. Your cutting should include: the node, stem below and above, at least one healthy leaf, ideally an aerial root.
Step 4 — Callus cut surfaces (optional but helpful). Leave 12–24 hours in indirect light so cuts dry slightly. Not necessary for water, recommended for soil and moss.
03 · METHOD 1: WATER
The easiest method (~90% success)
Highest-success and easiest-to-monitor. Main downside: water roots differ from soil roots and cutting must transition to soil, causing temporary setback.
The process:
- 1Fill clear glass with room-temp filtered or distilled water.
- 2Submerge the node in water; leaf stays above.
- 3Bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun.
- 4Change water every 5–7 days.
- 5Watch for root development from node — small white bumps at 2–3 weeks, usable roots (2–4 inches) at 4–8 weeks.
- 6Transfer to soil when roots are 2–4 inches.

04 · METHOD 2: SOIL
Skip the transplant (~70% success)
Plants cutting directly in potting soil, developing soil-adapted roots from start. Lower success because you can’t monitor root development. But no transition step needed.
The process:
- 1Small pot (3–4 in) with well-draining mix (potting soil + 30% perlite).
- 2Make a hole with a pencil.
- 3Optional: dip cut end in rooting hormone.
- 4Plant with node about 1 inch below soil surface.
- 5Water lightly — just to settle soil.
- 6Cover with clear plastic bag for 2–3 weeks to maintain humidity.
- 7Water when top 1/2 inch dry.
Rooting completes at 6–10 weeks — visible when new growth appears.

05 · METHOD 3: SPHAGNUM MOSS
The propagator’s choice (~85% success)
Balances visibility of water with root structures closer to soil roots. Preferred by experienced propagators for finicky aroids.
The process:
- 1Soak long-fiber sphagnum in water 30 min, wring out to damp not dripping.
- 2Fill clear cup with damp moss.
- 3Nestle cutting with node buried, leaf above.
- 4Cover loosely with clear plastic bag.

Cutting rotting in water: Bacterial contamination. Change water every 3–5 days. Trim rotted portion, restart.
Cutting drying up: Insufficient humidity for soil or moss. Use plastic bag or dome.
Roots forming but no new leaf: Normal for first weeks. New leaf emerges after roots established, typically 6–12 weeks.
