The 5 causes, ranked by frequency

Before doing anything else, examine the soil. Stick a finger 2 inches in. If the soil is soggy or smells musty, you have an overwatering problem — even if you don’t think you’ve been watering often. Beyond soil moisture, the remaining causes are diagnosable from the pattern of yellowing. Where on the plant are the yellow leaves — lowest leaves, randomly placed, or newest growth? 02 · CAUSE 1

Overwatering — the most common cause

Overwatering accounts for roughly half of all Monstera yellowing cases. The mechanism is straightforward: chronically saturated soil prevents air exchange around the roots, root cells suffocate and begin to decompose, and the resulting Phytophthora or Pythium root rot prevents the plant from taking up water and nutrients[5]. Paradoxically, an overwatered Monstera shows symptoms similar to underwatering — wilting and yellowing — because damaged roots can no longer move water to leaves even when there’s plenty of water in the soil.

Telltale signs:

  • Soggy soil persisting more than a week after watering. Healthy Monstera soil should be drying meaningfully within 7–10 days. Soil that stays wet past two weeks indicates either chronic over-watering or genuinely poor drainage.
  • Yellow leaves with dark brown spots, particularly on lower leaves. Distinct from the uniform crispy edges of underwatering. Overwatering yellowing typically has dark blotchy patches surrounded by yellow halos.
  • Soft mushy stems near the soil line. Stems should be firm. Softness at the soil line signals root rot reaching the crown. At this stage, recovery is uncertain.
  • Musty or sulfurous smell from the soil. Decomposing roots produce a distinct odor. If you can smell it, the rot is significant — unpot immediately.
  • Multiple leaves yellowing at once. A single yellow leaf can be normal aging. Three or four leaves yellowing in the same week is a systemic problem — almost always overwatering.

The fix: Stop watering. Remove the plant from its pot, gently shake or rinse off the saturated soil, and inspect the rootball. Healthy roots are firm and white or light tan. Black, mushy, or foul-smelling roots are dead — trim them away with clean shears. Repot in fresh, well-draining aroid mix (standard houseplant soil amended with 25–30% perlite or orchid bark) in a clean pot only slightly larger than the rootball[6]. 03 · CAUSE 2

Underwatering or inconsistent watering

Underwatering is the second most common cause and is often confused with overwatering because both produce yellowing and wilting. The distinguishing feature is soil moisture: dry soil with leaf droop is underwatering; wet soil with leaf droop is overwatering[7]. Monsteras tolerate brief drought well but extended drought damages roots, and damaged roots can’t take up water when it’s eventually provided — producing yellowing that persists even after you resume watering.

Telltale signs:

  • Soil bone-dry 3+ inches deep. Stick a finger or chopstick into the soil. If it comes out dust-dry to 3 inches, the plant is past underwatered.
  • Soil pulled away from the pot wall. Severely dry soil shrinks and leaves a visible gap around the pot. Water poured in may channel straight down without rehydrating the rootball.
  • Lower leaves yellowing first. The plant sacrifices its oldest leaves to conserve water for newer growth. Yellowing that starts at lowest leaves and progresses upward suggests chronic drought.
  • Crispy brown edges on otherwise yellow leaves. Distinct from overwatering yellowing, which has wet-edged dark spots. Underwatering produces dry crispy browning at the leaf margin.
  • Slow growth and lack of new leaves. Chronically drought-stressed Monsteras stop producing new growth before they shed old leaves.

The fix: If the soil is moderately dry, water thoroughly until water drains from the pot, then resume a normal watering schedule. If the soil has shrunk away from the pot wall, bottom-soak the pot in a basin of water for 30–45 minutes to rehydrate the rootball thoroughly — surface watering will channel down the gap without wetting the roots. 04 · CAUSE 3

Insufficient light

Monsteras require bright indirect light to thrive. In low-light conditions, they survive but progressively decline — producing fewer fenestrations, growing leggier, and eventually yellowing oldest leaves as the plant lacks the photosynthetic energy to sustain its full canopy[8]. Light-related yellowing develops gradually over weeks or months rather than appearing suddenly.

Telltale signs: Lower leaves yellowing in a pattern that’s consistent over time, leggy spaced-out growth between leaves, new leaves emerging without the characteristic splits and holes (fenestrations), and overall slow growth. The plant typically isn’t in immediate decline, just persistently underperforming.

The fix: Move the plant to brighter indirect light — an east-facing window with morning sun, a south-facing window with sheer curtains, or 2–4 feet from a west or south window. 05 · CAUSE 4

Natural aging of oldest leaves

Monstera leaves don’t live forever. Mature plants periodically yellow and shed their oldest leaves as part of normal turnover, even when everything else is fine[9]. This is the cause for roughly one in ten yellow-leaf cases, and it’s the only one that requires no intervention.

Telltale signs: A single yellow leaf at the very bottom of the plant, with no other yellowing elsewhere. The plant is otherwise producing healthy new growth, soil moisture is appropriate, light is adequate, and stems are firm. The yellowing leaf is one of the oldest on the plant — often at the soil line or just above — and may have been on the plant for a year or more.

The fix: Cut the yellowing leaf off at its base with clean shears. The plant will continue producing new leaves at the top of its growing stem. This is normal. If your Monstera produces one yellow leaf every 6–8 weeks at the base while continuing to grow vigorously up top, it’s fine.

06 · CAUSE 5

Nutrient deficiency

Monsteras kept in the same pot for years without fertilization or repotting eventually deplete the soil’s available nutrients. Nitrogen deficiency in particular causes uniform pale-yellow color across older leaves, often progressing from lower to upper leaves over time[10]. This is uncommon for plants under 2 years old in their original potting mix but becomes increasingly common in older plantings.

Telltale signs: Uniform pale yellowing across multiple older leaves rather than spots or patches. Soil that’s been undisturbed for 2+ years. No fertilization history. The plant may also show stunted new growth and smaller-than-typical new leaves.

The fix: Begin a regular fertilization schedule with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer (10-10-10 or similar N-P-K ratio) at half-strength every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring through early fall). Don’t fertilize during winter dormancy. 07 · LESS COMMON CAUSES

Cold stress, transplant shock, and root-bound conditions

These three causes together account for the remaining ~5% of Monstera yellowing cases. Each has distinctive context that helps with diagnosis.

Cold stress: Monsteras decline below 55°F and suffer leaf damage from temperatures below 50°F[11]. If your Monstera is near a cold drafty window in winter, an AC vent, or an exterior door, cold damage may explain yellowing — particularly if yellowing is on the side of the plant facing the cold source. Move to a warmer location.

Transplant shock: Monsteras dislike being moved or repotted and may yellow a few leaves as they rebalance to new conditions[12]. If yellowing appeared within 1–3 weeks of repotting or relocating, that’s likely the cause. Don’t make further changes — the plant will stabilize within 4–6 weeks.

Root-bound conditions: A Monstera that’s outgrown its pot has too much root mass for the available soil, dries out fast, and may show yellowing from chronic mild drought. Signs include roots circling the bottom of the pot, roots emerging from drainage holes, water running straight through without wetting the soil, and a pot that feels heavier from roots than from moist soil. The fix is repotting up one pot size (12 to 14 inches, for example), preferably at the start of spring growing season.

08 · RECOVERY

Your diagnostic and recovery checklist

Run through this checklist in order. Stop at the first cause that matches your symptoms:

1. Check soil moisture. Soggy soil + yellow leaves = overwatering. Bone-dry soil + yellow leaves = underwatering. Take action immediately.

2. Examine the yellowing pattern. Single yellow leaf at the bottom while the rest of the plant is healthy = natural aging. Multiple leaves yellowing at once = systemic problem.

3. Consider light conditions. Is your Monstera in genuinely bright indirect light? If it’s more than 6 feet from any window or in a low-light room, that may be the cause — particularly if growth has been slow and leaves lack fenestrations.

4. Review fertilization history. If the plant has been in the same soil for 2+ years with no fertilization, nutrient deficiency is plausible.
