Why Are My Plant's Leaves Turning Yellow?

Yellow leaves are the single most common complaint in indoor gardening, and also the least specific. Yellowing — chlorosis, properly — is simply what a leaf looks like when chlorophyll breaks down faster than it is replaced, and a dozen different problems can produce that outcome, from a plant retiring one old leaf to a rootball that has been sitting in water for a fortnight[1][3]. The mistake almost everyone makes is to ask what the yellow looks like. The far more useful question is where it is. Old leaves or new leaves, whole leaf or between the veins, one leaf or many — those three observations narrow eight possible causes down to one or two in about ten seconds. This guide organises yellow leaves around that idea, then works through each cause and its fix.

Start with location. Nitrogen and magnesium are mobile inside a plant, so when they run short the plant strips them out of old leaves to feed new ones — deficiency appears on the oldest, lowest leaves. Iron and calcium are immobile and cannot be moved, so their deficiencies show on the newest, uppermost growth. Overwatering, the most common cause of all, typically yellows lower leaves broadly and leaves the mix damp; underwatering yellows and crisps them while the mix is bone dry. A single lowest leaf yellowing slowly on an otherwise healthy plant is normal senescence and needs no action at all.

01 · THE ORGANISING RULE

Old leaves or new leaves? The mobility rule

If you learn one thing about yellow leaves, learn this. Mineral nutrients differ in how freely a plant can move them around once they are inside its tissues, and that difference is diagnostically decisive. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium are phloem-mobile: when supply falls short, the plant dismantles compounds in mature leaves and exports the released nutrient to the growing points, which are its priority. The old leaves pay the price and yellow first[14][13].

Iron, calcium, boron and manganese are effectively immobile. Once fixed into a mature leaf they stay there. A plant short of iron cannot rob its old leaves to supply the new ones, so the deficiency shows up exclusively on the newest, uppermost growth while the old leaves stay perfectly green. That contrast — green old leaves, yellow new leaves — is one of the most reliable signals in all of plant diagnosis.

Apply it before anything else. Yellowing concentrated on the bottom of the plant means you should be thinking about water, root function, nitrogen or magnesium, or simple ageing. Yellowing concentrated at the top and on new leaves means iron or calcium, which in houseplants almost always traces back to soil pH or waterlogged roots rather than to genuinely absent nutrients. Yellowing scattered randomly across the plant with no top-to-bottom pattern usually means something physical: pests, light, cold or chemical damage.

One extra layer sharpens it further. Note whether the whole leaf is uniformly yellow or whether the veins stay green while the tissue between them yellows. Uniform yellowing points to nitrogen or to root failure; interveinal yellowing — a fine green vein network on a yellow background — points to iron on new leaves or magnesium on old ones.

02 · THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE

Overwatering: the default answer, and usually right

If you have to bet before examining anything, bet on overwatering. It is the leading cause of houseplant decline in extension diagnostic guidance, and yellow lower leaves are its signature symptom[1][5]. The word itself misleads people, because the damage is not caused by too much water in a single event — it is caused by too little air, for too long, too often.

Roots respire. They consume oxygen from air-filled pore spaces to power the active transport that pulls mineral nutrients into the plant. When mix stays saturated, water fills those pores, oxygen diffuses through water roughly ten thousand times more slowly than through air, and root respiration fails. Nutrient uptake stops even though the nutrients are physically present, so the plant does exactly what a nitrogen-starved plant does — it strips mobile nutrients out of its oldest leaves. That is why chronic overwatering looks like nitrogen deficiency, and why feeding it makes things worse. Weakened roots are then colonised by Pythium and Phytophthora, and functional decline becomes actual rot[8][15].

The pattern to look for: several lower leaves turning uniformly yellow over a week or two, often limp rather than crisp, sometimes with soft brown patches, and yellowing that creeps upward. The mix is damp when you push a finger two inches in. There may be fungus gnats, a musty smell, or a saucer with standing water in it. New growth may be small, pale and slow.

The fix is not to stop watering — it is to change frequency and drainage. Empty any cachepot or saucer, let the top two inches dry before watering again, and check that the pot actually drains freely. If the plant fails to improve within a fortnight, tip it out and inspect the roots: brown, soft roots whose outer layer slides off need cutting away and replacing with fresh, open mix in a pot barely larger than what survives.

03 · THE LOOK-ALIKE

Underwatering, and why it looks the same

Underwatering also yellows lower leaves first, for a related reason: when soil water runs out, the plant sheds mature foliage to cut its transpiring leaf area, recovering mobile nutrients from those leaves as it goes. The end state looks similar, which is why examining foliage alone cannot tell the two apart.

The differences are in texture and in the soil. Drought-yellowed leaves feel thin, dry and papery, and they often brown and crisp at the tip and margin before the whole leaf goes. Overwatered leaves stay soft, limp and sometimes translucent. Drought yellowing spreads upward quickly, over days; overwatering yellowing tends to be slower. Above all, check the mix two inches down: dusty, light and pulled away from the pot wall means drought, and cool and damp means the opposite. There is a trap here. A mix that has dried below roughly 30 percent of its water-holding capacity becomes water-repellent and shrinks from the pot wall, so top water runs down the gap and out the drainage holes in seconds. The pot feels watered, the surface looks dark, and the core of the rootball is still dust. Plants in this state show drought symptoms despite being watered on schedule. If your watering drains through unusually fast, stand the pot in two to three inches of water for 20 to 30 minutes to rewet it from below, then let it drain.

The deeper problem in both directions is inconsistency. A plant swinging between saturated and desiccated loses roots at both extremes, and the yellowing you see is the cumulative result rather than a response to this week's watering.

04 · WHERE THE YELLOW IS

Reading the position of the yellowing

Find the leaves that are yellowing, note where they sit on the plant, and match the pattern below. This grid does most of the diagnostic work.

01 · Lowest leaves, uniform

Water or nitrogen

Whole leaf yellows evenly. Damp mix means overwatering; dry mix means drought; correct moisture and pale small new growth means nitrogen.

02 · Old leaves, interveinal

Magnesium

Green veins on a yellowing background, mature leaves only, often starting at the margins and working inward. Magnesium is mobile, so old tissue goes first.

03 · New leaves, interveinal

Iron chlorosis

Newest leaves yellow with a fine green vein net while old leaves stay green. Iron is immobile; the cause is usually high pH or waterlogging, not absent iron.

04 · Scattered or stippled

Pests or light

No top-to-bottom logic. Fine speckling means mites or thrips; bleached patches on the sun-facing side mean excess light; whole-plant pallor means too little.

Two caveats. First, more than one cause can run at once — an overwatered plant in low light will show both patterns. Second, the grid describes the leaves that are changing now. Leaves that yellowed months ago and stayed on the plant tell you about a problem that may already be solved.

05 · NOT A PROBLEM

Natural senescence: when yellow is just old age

Before you change anything, rule this out. Leaves are not permanent organs. As a plant grows, its lowest leaves become progressively shaded by the foliage above them, and at some point the carbon a leaf fixes no longer covers the cost of maintaining it. The plant then initiates programmed senescence: chlorophyll is dismantled, nitrogen and magnesium are exported to active tissue, the leaf yellows, and it abscises[12][13]. This is a normal, efficient recycling process, not a symptom.

You can recognise it by four features. It affects only the oldest, lowest leaf or two. It is gradual, over two to four weeks rather than days. The rest of the plant looks healthy and is producing new leaves of normal size and colour. And the yellowing is even — no spots, no stippling, no soft brown patches.

Some plants do this conspicuously. A ZZ plant will retire an entire lower stem over months; a rubber plant sheds its lowest leaf every few weeks in active growth. The distinction that matters: senescence is one leaf at a time and the plant is otherwise thriving. If three or four lower leaves are yellowing at once, or new growth has stalled, it is not old age — go back to the water and root checks.

06 · NUTRIENT CAUSES

Nitrogen, magnesium and iron in detail

Genuine nutrient deficiency is a real cause of yellow leaves but a less common one than the internet suggests, because most indoor plants are underfed rather than starved and most yellowing traces to water. Still, three deficiencies are worth recognising precisely.

  • Nitrogen — uniform yellowing from the bottom up. The whole old leaf pales evenly to yellow-green, then yellow, while new growth comes in small and pale. Typical in plants in the same mix for two or more years with no feeding. Nitrogen is highly mobile, so the plant always sacrifices the oldest tissue first.
  • Magnesium — interveinal yellowing on old leaves. Magnesium sits at the centre of the chlorophyll molecule, so shortage bleaches the tissue between the veins while the veins stay green. Mobile, therefore old leaves first, often starting at the leaf margins. Common where potassium fertilisation has been heavy.
  • Iron — interveinal yellowing on new leaves. The reverse position, and the tell. Iron is immobile, so only new growth suffers. In pots the usual cause is not a lack of iron but high pH or waterlogged, low-oxygen media locking it into unavailable forms. Correct drainage and pH before reaching for an iron supplement.
  • Excess fertiliser — yellowing with scorched margins. Overfeeding raises soil salinity, damages root tips and produces yellowing accompanied by sharp brown leaf edges. If you have fed recently and heavily, leach the pot with about twice its volume of water rather than feeding more.

The practical order of operations is important. Confirm the mix is neither saturated nor bone dry and that roots are firm, then consider nutrition. Fertilising a plant whose roots cannot absorb only adds salt to a pot that already has too much[11]. When you do feed, use a balanced soluble fertiliser at half the label rate during active growth, and stop in the dark months when growth slows.

07 · LIGHT, COLD AND PESTS

The environmental and biological causes

Too little light produces slow, whole-plant yellowing that starts low down, combined with stretched stems, smaller new leaves and stalled growth. The plant cannot fix enough carbon to maintain its full leaf area, so it retires the most shaded leaves. Indoor light drops far more steeply with distance from a window than it appears to, because your eye adapts while photosynthesis does not[6]. Move the plant closer, over two weeks if the change is large.

Too much light looks different: bleached, washed-out yellow or whitish patches on the leaves facing the light source, sometimes with dry tan centres. It affects exposed leaves regardless of age, and appears within days of a move into direct sun. Pull the plant back or diffuse the light with a sheer curtain.

Cold damage yellows leaves that touched a cold window pane or sat in a draught from a door, often with grey-green water-soaked patches that dry to brown. Most tropical foliage plants are unhappy below about 12 °C, and chilling injury can appear a day or two after the exposure[7][9]. The damage is positional rather than age-related, which is the clue.

Sap-feeding pests produce fine yellow stippling rather than block yellowing. Spider mites drain individual cells, leaving a dotted or sandblasted look plus webbing in the leaf axils; thrips leave silvery streaks with tiny black frass specks; heavy scale or mealybug infestations yellow whole leaves and leave sticky honeydew below[4]. Turn leaves over before concluding a plant has a nutrient problem.

08 · WHAT TO DO

A five-minute diagnostic routine

One: locate the yellowing. Old leaves, new leaves, or scattered? Whole leaf or interveinal? Write it down if it helps — this determines everything that follows.

Two: read the soil. Finger two inches in, or lift the pot and judge the weight. Damp on a yellowing plant means overwatering; dusty means drought; correct moisture sends you to nutrition, light or pests.

Three: count the leaves involved. One old bottom leaf on a healthy plant is senescence. Several at once is a genuine problem.

Four: turn leaves over. Thirty seconds of pest inspection saves weeks of guessing at nutrients.

Five: change one thing and wait. Adjust watering, or move the plant, or treat the pest — but only one, and give it three to four weeks. Changing four variables at once guarantees you will never know which mattered, and the plant is already stressed.

Finally, set your expectations correctly. Yellow leaves never turn green again. Chlorophyll degradation is irreversible and, in a leaf that has begun senescing, the plant has already exported the useful contents. Remove badly yellowed leaves for appearance, then judge whether your fix worked entirely by the colour, size and rate of new growth. That is the only honest measure of recovery.

Yellow leaves are a symptom with many causes, but a short diagnostic path. Ask where the yellowing sits before you ask what it looks like: mobile nutrients such as nitrogen and magnesium desert old leaves first, immobile ones such as iron and calcium fail on new growth first, and overwatering — still the most likely answer — mimics nitrogen deficiency by shutting down uptake in saturated media. Check the soil, count how many leaves are involved, look under a few, and rule out normal senescence of the lowest leaf. Then change one thing, wait a month, and read the answer in the new leaves.
