Those hairs trap a thin layer of still air against the leaf surface — useful in the plant's native cloud-forest habitat, where it helps hold humidity close to the tissue. But when a water droplet lands on that hairy surface, it does not run off. It sits, held in place by the trichomes, and acts as a small lens and an insulator over one patch of leaf[6].
If that water is noticeably colder than the leaf, the sudden local chilling damages the cells underneath, and the result is the pale, ring-shaped or blotchy spotting that African violet growers know so well[7]. The marks are permanent on the affected leaf. This is why room-temperature water is not a nicety but a rule — and why bottom watering, which never wets the foliage at all, is the safest default. Humidity: African violets come from humid cloud forest and prefer 50–60% relative humidity. Dry winter air (often below 30% with central heating) causes crisp leaf edges and poor bud opening regardless of how well you water. Pot size and material: African violets bloom best slightly pot-bound in a shallow pot roughly one-third the diameter of the leaf rosette. - Mushy, brown centre — crown rot. The definitive overwatering failure. The newest leaves at the middle of the rosette go soft and dark and pull away easily. Salvage the plant by rooting healthy outer leaf cuttings; the rotted crown does not recover.
- Limp leaves on wet soil. The most confusing sign — a violet that looks thirsty while sitting in damp mix has rotting roots that can no longer take up water. Do not water more; let it dry out and check drainage.
- Pale rings and blotches on the leaves. Not rot but the related method error: cold water splashed on the foliage. Permanent on affected leaves — switch to room-temperature bottom watering and remove the worst-marked ones.
- Fungus gnats and constantly damp mix. Small flies around the pot indicate soil that never dries. Extend the interval, empty the tray promptly, and let the surface dry between waterings.

How to actually water an African violet
Bottom watering is the default. Stand the pot in a shallow dish holding an inch or so of room-temperature water and leave it for 20–30 minutes. The mix wicks moisture up through the drainage holes, the surface darkens as it becomes damp, and no water ever touches a leaf. Then lift the pot out, let it drain, and tip away whatever is left in the dish — never leave the plant standing[11].
If you prefer to water from above, use a narrow-spouted can and deliver the water at the soil edge, tucking the spout under the leaves and pouring against the inside of the pot rim. Water until it just begins to run from the drainage holes. The rule is absolute: nothing on the leaves, and nothing in the crown.
Use room-temperature water only. Fill a jug and leave it out overnight — this brings it to room temperature and lets chlorine dissipate at the same time. Where tap water is very hard or heavily softened, filtered or collected rainwater (warmed to room temperature) gives better long-term results, as salts accumulate quickly in a small pot.
Every month or two, flush the pot from the top with a generous volume of tepid water — carefully, at the soil edge — to leach out accumulated fertilizer salts. A white crust on the rim or soil surface is the sign this is overdue, and those salts can burn the leaf stalks where they touch the pot.

Saintpaulia ionantha is a small evergreen perennial in the gesneriad family (Gesneriaceae), native to the cloud-forested Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania and Kenya, where it grows on shaded, humid rock faces and forest floors[4][14]. Botanists have now folded the genus Saintpaulia into Streptocarpus, so you will see it written as Streptocarpus ionanthus in current references — the horticultural name has not budged. That mountain-forest heritage explains the whole personality: it wants warmth, diffuse brightness, and high humidity, and it dislikes cold, glare, and stagnant wet.
As a plant to live with, an African violet is compact, long-lived, and quietly generous. A well-sited plant can flower for most of the year, and a good specimen lives for decades.
