Where to put your snake plant

South-facing windows: Very bright. Place snake plant 1–3 feet back from the window, or right at the window with a sheer curtain in summer to avoid direct sun scorching.

West-facing windows: Similar to south, with harsh afternoon sun. Place 1–3 feet back or use sheer curtain.

East-facing windows: Ideal placement. Bright morning sun (gentle enough for direct exposure) plus indirect light through the day. Place right at the window.

North-facing windows: Adequate. Place right at the window. Growth is slower than at east/south/west windows.

03 · SIGNS OF TOO LITTLE LIGHT

Low-light symptoms

No new leaves in months. The clearest sign. Healthy snake plants in appropriate light produce 1–3 new leaves per year in growing season. No new growth = probably not enough light.

Leaves flopping outward instead of standing upright. Weak leaves develop in insufficient light. Upright rigid growth is a sign of adequate light.

Reduced variegation on variegated cultivars. Yellow-striped varieties (like laurentii) show less pronounced yellow banding in low light.

Pale or dull leaf color. Well-lit snake plants have deep green with clear silver-gray banding. Low-light plants are dull and washed-out.

The fix: Move to brighter location. Snake plants tolerate the move well — no gradual acclimation needed for modest increases. New growth appears within 6–10 weeks of improved light.

Direct-sun symptoms

Bleached patches on leaves. Sunburn. Concentrated on the side facing the light source. Damage is permanent in the affected tissue.

Reddish or brownish leaf tips. Stress from too much light plus heat. Can happen at south/west windows in summer without diffusion.

Yellowing tissue that’s not at the base. Distinct from base yellowing which indicates root rot — sun-caused yellowing is usually on upper leaves facing the light source.

The fix: Move away from direct sun or use sheer curtain. Snake plants that have been exposed to too much light need 2–3 weeks to acclimate to lower-light conditions after the move.

05 · GROW LIGHTS

Supplementing natural light

For dark spaces where you want your snake plant to actually grow, LED grow lights work well. Snake plants have modest light requirements compared to fenestrated aroids or high-light succulents.

Setup: LED grow light 12–24 inches above the plant, 10–12 hours per day. Full-spectrum white (5000–6500K) is preferred.

Power: A 15–20W LED grow light is sufficient for a single snake plant. Larger models cover multiple plants.
