Bottom Watering: How Long to Soak and When to Stop
Bottom watering is one of the few houseplant techniques that is genuinely hard to get wrong — provided you know when to take the pot out again. Setting a container in a shallow basin and letting capillary action pull water upward produces the most uniform wetting of a rootball you can achieve at home, and extension horticulturists list it as a standard method for indoor plants[1][2]. The mistake almost nobody warns you about is leaving the pot standing there. A forgotten pot in a basin is exactly as waterlogged as a forgotten pot in a full saucer, and the roots do not care which direction the water arrived from. This guide gives you the soak times, the visual stop signal, the draining step, and the symptoms that mean you went too far.
Soak a 4–6 inch pot for 15–30 minutes. Larger pots need longer — up to about 45 minutes for 10 inches and above. Stop the moment the surface of the mix darkens with moisture: that means the wetting front has travelled the full height of the rootball and there is nothing left to gain. Lift the pot out, let it drain completely for 10–15 minutes, and only then put it back on its saucer. A pot that comes out unusually heavy, feels squelchy, or smells sour has been soaked too long.
01 · THE SHORT ANSWER
How long should you bottom water a houseplant?
For the overwhelming majority of houseplants in ordinary peat- or coir-based mix, the answer is 15 to 30 minutes in two to three inches of room-temperature water. That range covers standard 4-inch and 6-inch pots, which is what most collections are made of. Push to 30–45 minutes for 8-inch and 10-inch pots, where the water has further to climb. Beyond roughly 10 inches, bottom watering stops being practical at all — the pot is too heavy to lift wet, and you should be top watering instead.
Those numbers are guidelines, not rules, because the actual soak time depends on three things: the height of the pot (water has to climb it), how dry the mix has become (bone-dry peat resists wetting at first), and how coarse the mix is (chunky aroid mixes wick more slowly than fine seed compost). A shallow 4-inch pot of moist mix can finish in eight minutes. A tall 8-inch pot of hydrophobic peat can still be working at 40.
This is why the timer is a backstop, not the instruction. The instruction is: watch the surface. Water rises through the pores until the whole profile is at container capacity, and the last place it reaches is the top. When the top goes dark and damp, the job is finished, whether that took twelve minutes or forty. Set a timer so you do not forget the pot entirely, then check it visually.

02 · SOAK TIMES BY POT SIZE
How pot size changes the soak time
Capillary rise is slow, and it slows further the higher it has to go. Water moves upward because dry pores hold water at a more negative matric potential than wet ones, and that pull weakens as the column lengthens and gravity works against it[12][13]. A pot twice as tall does not take twice as long — it takes rather more than twice as long. Use these as starting points and adjust on what you see.
4-INCH POT
10–15 min
Short column, fast rise. Nursery pots and small propagations are often done inside ten minutes. Check early.
6-INCH POT
15–30 min
The standard houseplant size and the source of the classic 15–30 minute figure. Most plants land near 20.
8-INCH POT
30–40 min
Taller column, slower front. Use a deeper basin so the water level does not drop away as the pot drinks.
10-INCH AND UP
40–45 min
The practical ceiling. If the surface is still dry at 45 minutes, top water instead — the pot is too tall for this method.
Two adjustments worth making. First, if the mix has gone properly hydrophobic — water beads on the surface, the rootball has shrunk away from the pot wall — add ten minutes to every figure above, because the first few minutes are spent overcoming water repellency rather than moving water. Second, terracotta absorbs water into its own walls before passing it on, so a terracotta pot typically runs five to ten minutes longer than a plastic one of the same size.

03 · THE METHOD
Bottom watering step by step
The whole technique is six steps, and five of them take seconds. Only the waiting has any duration.
- Check that the plant actually needs water first. Push a finger one to two inches into the mix, or lift the pot and judge its weight. Bottom watering does not make a wet pot safer to water — it saturates the mix just as thoroughly as pouring from above, and doing it on schedule rather than on need is how people drown plants politely.
- Fill a basin with two to three inches of room-temperature water. A washing-up bowl, a sink with the plug in, or a deep tray all work. The water only needs to reach the lower third of the pot; it does not need to come near the rim, and a deeper bath adds nothing but weight. Cold water straight from the tap can shock tropical roots, so let it stand or mix in a little warm.
- Remove the cachepot and set the bare pot in, drainage holes down. A decorative outer pot has no holes, so it will simply fill up and defeat the exercise. If the pot has a saucer glued or clipped on, take that off too. Bare drainage holes in direct contact with the water are the whole mechanism.
- Set a timer, then judge by the surface. Start with the figure for your pot size, but treat the alarm as a prompt to look rather than a verdict. If the top of the mix has darkened, the pot is done early; if it has not, top up the basin and give it another ten minutes.
The two remaining steps are lifting the pot out and letting it drain, which are important enough to get their own sections below. One extra note on the basin: keep the water level topped up during a long soak. A thirsty 8-inch pot can drink an inch out of a shallow tray in fifteen minutes and then sit on damp plastic doing nothing for the rest of the time.
Do not add fertiliser to the basin. Nutrients delivered from below have no route back out of the pot, so they accumulate in the mix and concentrate at the surface as water evaporates. 04 · THE STOP SIGNAL
When to stop: the surface darkens
There is exactly one signal that matters, and it is visual. Dry potting mix is pale — light brown, greyish, dusty. Wet potting mix is dark. As the capillary front climbs, the pot changes colour from the bottom up, and when the top surface finally turns dark and feels cool and damp to a fingertip, water has reached the full height of the rootball. That is your cue. Take the pot out.
Nothing useful happens after that point. The mix is at container capacity — the maximum water it can hold against gravity for that pot height — and further time in the basin does not add moisture, it only prevents the pot from draining down to that capacity[14]. Every additional minute is a minute the mix stays fully saturated with the air spaces flooded.
If you are watering something with a heavy top dressing — bark chips, moss, LECA, decorative gravel — the surface colour cue is hidden. In that case use weight instead: pick the pot up before you start and again at intervals. When it stops getting noticeably heavier, it is finished. A finger pushed down through the top dressing into the mix beneath works just as well.
A word on the backstop timer, because this is where bottom watering goes wrong most often. Sixty to ninety minutes in a basin is not a disaster for a healthy plant in a well-aerated mix, but several hours is, and overnight regularly kills. Roots respire — they consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide — and oxygen diffuses through water about ten thousand times more slowly than through air[13][15]. A rootball held saturated goes anoxic within hours, and root rot follows: not a disease that attacks healthy roots, but water moulds such as Pythium and Phytophthora colonising tissue already suffocated[8]. 05 · DRAINING AFTERWARDS
Always drain fully before the pot goes back
A pot lifted straight out of a basin is holding considerably more water than it can keep. Give it ten to fifteen minutes on a rack, in an empty sink, or over the basin before it returns to its saucer or cachepot. During that time the excess drains away and air is pulled back down into the pore spaces behind it — which is the entire point of drainage. Skipping this step and dropping a dripping pot straight into a sealed cachepot recreates the standing-water problem you were trying to avoid.
Even after full drainage, a saturated zone remains at the very bottom of the pot. This is the perched water table, and it exists in every container regardless of mix, pot material or watering direction, because water cannot leave the base until the tension there falls to zero[10][12]. It is typically an inch or two deep. Adding a layer of gravel at the bottom does not remove it — the abrupt change in pore size actually holds the water table higher, pushing the saturated zone up into the rootball where the roots are.
Because that zone is unavoidable, the only variable you control is how long it stays saturated. Draining properly shrinks it as far as physics allows and lets it dry down between waterings. Leaving the pot in water, or in a saucer with an inch of runoff, keeps it flooded indefinitely and steadily starves the deepest roots of oxygen.
Tip the runoff away rather than reusing it. It carries dissolved fertiliser residue and tap-water minerals out of the mix, and pouring it back in defeats what little leaching bottom watering allows. If you soak several plants in one basin, change the water when it looks cloudy or tea-coloured — and never share a basin with a plant you suspect has root rot, since water moulds spread readily in standing water.
06 · OVER-SOAKING
Signs you left the pot in too long
Over-soaking is quiet. There is no dramatic moment, just a pot that sat in the sink while you got distracted. The tells are physical and you can catch them the same day.
It is unusually heavy, and stays heavy. A correctly watered and drained pot is heavy immediately after watering, then loses noticeable weight over the first hour as excess drains. A pot that is still leaden two hours later, with water beading at the drainage holes, has more water in it than the mix can shed.
The mix feels squelchy rather than damp. Press the surface. Properly moist mix springs back and leaves your finger damp. Waterlogged mix gives under pressure and pools water in the depression, because the pore spaces are full rather than film-coated.
There is a sour, swampy or sulphurous smell. Healthy potting mix smells of damp earth. A sour or eggy note means anaerobic conditions have set in and the microbial community has switched to fermentation and sulphate reduction. This is the clearest warning sign there is, and it means the saturated zone has been flooded long enough to run out of oxygen.
Leaves go limp while the soil is soaking wet. This is the classic confusion: it looks like thirst, so people water again. In fact damaged, oxygen-starved roots have stopped conducting water, so the plant wilts in a wet pot. If you catch it early, recovery is straightforward: get the pot out of every saucer and cachepot, stand it somewhere airy on a rack so it drains from all sides, and do not water again until the top two inches are genuinely dry. Tilting the pot on its side for an hour helps shed the perched water table. If the smell persists after a week, or if the plant keeps declining, unpot it, cut away any black or mushy roots, and repot into fresh, well-aerated mix in a pot no larger than necessary.
07 · BUILDING THE ROUTINE
Fitting soaks into a real watering routine
Bottom watering is a batch job. Line up four or five pots along a sink or in a large tray, fill to three inches, set one timer, and pull them out in the order they went in. Handled that way, a shelf of plants takes about forty minutes of mostly unattended time, which is why so many people move to it once a collection grows past a dozen plants.
Do not soak on a schedule, though. The interval between waterings is set by the plant, the light, the season and the pot — a pothos in a bright window in July may want water weekly, and the same plant in a dim corner in January may go three weeks or more, as the seasonal swing in how often to water a pothos illustrates. Check moisture first, soak only the pots that are ready, and let the rest wait their turn.
Two housekeeping rules keep the method honest over the long run. First, top water thoroughly every fourth to sixth watering instead of soaking, so that accumulated fertiliser and tap-water salts get flushed out through the drainage holes rather than concentrating at the surface where capillary flow deposits them[11]. Second, if a white crust forms on the surface or around the rim, scrape off the top half-inch of mix and replace it before you leach.
And if the timer is the part you keep failing at — which it is, for most people — the answer is not a better alarm but a method that cannot flood in the first place.
