Why Is My Plant Dropping Leaves?

Leaf drop is alarming out of proportion to what it usually means. A plant shedding foliage looks like a plant dying, so the instinct is to intervene immediately — almost always by watering more, which is the wrong move about half the time. In fact, abscission is an active, controlled process: the plant builds a specialised layer of cells at the base of the petiole and deliberately releases the leaf, usually after recovering the mobile nutrients from it first[14][12]. Your plant is not falling apart. It is making a decision, and the useful question is what it is responding to. The answer is written in which leaves it chose to drop.

Which leaves fall is the diagnostic. Lowest and oldest leaves yellowing then dropping one at a time is normal senescence or, if fast and paired with wet soil, root rot. A sudden shower of leaves from all over the plant within a week or two of moving it is almost always acclimation to changed light — figs and other woody plants shed the sun leaves they built in a brighter place and regrow thinner shade leaves. Green leaves dropping without yellowing points at cold draughts or acute shock. New growth dropping or aborting means the roots are failing. Check the soil, the recent history and the leaf undersides before changing anything, and resist the urge to water a dropping plant reflexively.

01 · THE SHORT ANSWER

Why plants drop leaves at all

A leaf is an investment. It costs the plant carbon and nitrogen to build and it costs water to run, because every stoma open for carbon dioxide is also losing water vapour. A leaf earns its keep only while the photosynthesis it performs exceeds the resources it consumes. When conditions change so that a leaf can no longer pay for itself — not enough light, not enough water reaching it, roots too damaged to supply it — the plant does the rational thing and closes the position. Hormonal signalling shifts, an abscission zone forms across the base of the petiole, the cell walls there dissolve, and the leaf falls[14].

That framing explains something people find counter-intuitive: leaf drop is frequently a sign the plant is managing a problem rather than succumbing to one. A fig that sheds a third of its canopy after moving house is rebalancing its leaf area to the light it now receives. A drought-stressed plant that drops its oldest leaves is reducing transpiring surface to protect the rest. Neither is a failure of care, and in both cases the correct response is patience plus a stable environment, not a rescue attempt.

The exceptions matter, though, and they are the cases where the plant is not adapting but failing. Root rot, severe salt injury and heavy pest infestation all cause leaf drop that will continue until you intervene. Telling the two categories apart is what the rest of this article is for, and the single most informative piece of evidence is the distribution of loss across the plant.

So before anything else, do three things. Note which leaves fell — the lowest and oldest, the newest, or an indiscriminate scatter. Note whether they yellowed first or dropped green. And write down what changed in the two to four weeks before the drop started: a move, a repot, a new radiator, a draughty window, a holiday, a change in feeding.

Which leaves are dropping?

Different causes attack different parts of the canopy, because they act through different mechanisms. Nutrient reallocation strips the oldest leaves. Supply failure hits the newest and hungriest. Environmental shock hits whatever is most exposed. Map the loss and you have narrowed four or five possibilities down to one or two.

01 · Lowest and oldest

Senescence or rot

One leaf at a time, yellowing evenly first, is normal ageing. Several at once with soil that never dries means root rot.

02 · All over, suddenly

Light change

A shower of leaves one to three weeks after moving the plant. Acclimation: sun leaves are being shed and replaced.

03 · New growth aborts

Root failure

Emerging leaves brown, shrivel or fall before hardening. The roots cannot meet peak demand. Unpot and inspect.

04 · Green leaves, one side

Cold or draught

Still-green leaves dropping, worst on the side facing a window, door or vent. Chilling injury, not a watering fault.

The yellow-or-green question refines it further. Yellowing before drop means the plant had time to remobilise nitrogen, magnesium and other mobile nutrients out of the leaf before releasing it — a gradual, planned withdrawal typical of senescence, light acclimation and slow-developing root problems. Green leaves dropping means the abscission was triggered abruptly, with no time for salvage: cold shock, a sharp chemical insult, or a very sudden collapse in water supply.

03 · THE BIG ONE

Sudden light change and acclimation

This is the cause behind most of the dramatic, alarming leaf drop that arrives in houseplant forums, and it is very widely misdiagnosed as a watering problem. It is worth understanding properly because the correct treatment is almost entirely hands-off.

Leaves are built for the light they develop in. A leaf that expands under high irradiance becomes a sun leaf: thicker, with more layers of palisade mesophyll, a denser network of photosynthetic machinery, more stomata per unit area, and a high light-saturation point. It is expensive to build and expensive to maintain, and it pays back handsomely under bright conditions. A leaf that expands in shade becomes a shade leaf: thinner, broader, cheaper, with a lower light-compensation point — the light level at which photosynthesis exactly balances respiration — so it can still turn a profit in dim conditions[13][12].

Crucially, a leaf's anatomy is fixed once it has expanded. It cannot be rebuilt. So when you move a plant from a bright nursery glasshouse to a living room — typically a drop of an order of magnitude in light — every sun leaf on it is suddenly operating below its compensation point. Each one now costs more in respiration than it earns in photosynthesis. The plant's response is exactly what an economist would predict: shed the loss-making leaves, recover their nitrogen, and reinvest it in new shade leaves suited to the actual conditions. That process is acclimation, and the leaf drop is the visible part of it[7][1].

Figs are the notorious example — weeping fig, fiddle-leaf fig, rubber plant — and woody plants in general are far more prone to it than soft-stemmed foliage plants like pothos or philodendron, which acclimate with much less drama. Typical pattern: you bring the plant home or move it across the room, nothing happens for one to three weeks, then leaves start falling steadily for two to four weeks, sometimes a third or more of the canopy. Then it stops, and new, slightly smaller, thinner, often darker leaves begin to appear. That is a successful acclimation, not a decline.

Four rules will get you through it.

  • Do not keep moving the plant. Every relocation restarts the process from scratch. Choose the brightest practical spot, put it there, and leave it alone for at least two months even while leaves are falling.
  • Reduce watering as the canopy thins. Fewer leaves means less transpiration, so the pot dries more slowly. Watering to the old schedule while the plant sheds is the classic route from acclimation into genuine root rot, which is the one thing that turns this recoverable situation into a serious one.
  • Do not fertilise during the drop. The plant is contracting, not expanding, and cannot use the nutrients. Adding fertiliser to a pot that is drying slowly simply raises salinity. Resume feeding when new leaves appear.
  • Transition gradually when you can. Moving a plant from outdoors to indoors, or between very different light levels, over two to three weeks in stages gives it time to build replacement leaves before shedding the old ones, and largely avoids the shower of loss.

04 · THE WATER CAUSES

Overwatering, root rot and drought stress

Both ends of the watering spectrum cause leaf drop, and the fact that they look superficially similar is why so many struggling plants get watered to death. In both cases the leaves are short of water. The difference is whether the water is absent from the pot or present but unreachable.

Overwatering and root rot. Roots respire and need oxygen in the pore spaces to do it. A mix kept saturated has no air-filled porosity, root respiration fails, fine absorbing roots die back, and water-mould pathogens such as Pythium and Phytophthora colonise the weakened tissue and accelerate the collapse[11][15]. The plant then cannot take up water from soil that is visibly wet. Classic signature: lower leaves yellow and drop first, several at a time; the soil has not dried in weeks; the pot feels heavy; there may be a sour smell at the drainage holes; and often some leaves go limp and yellow simultaneously, which never happens in ordinary senescence. Unpot and look — healthy roots are firm and pale, rotted roots are brown or black and soft, and the outer sheath slips off when pulled. Drought stress. When the rootball dries past the point of supply, the plant sheds leaves to cut transpiring area. The pattern is different: leaves usually wilt first and often crisp at the tips and margins before falling, the loss tends to start with the oldest foliage and work up, the pot is noticeably light, and the mix may have shrunk away from the wall. A vital detail is that severely dry peat- and coir-based mixes turn water-repellent, so watering runs straight down the gap and out of the holes without wetting the core — the plant can be watered weekly and still be in drought. The quickest discriminator costs nothing: lift the pot. A rotting plant sits in a heavy, sodden pot. A droughted plant sits in a light one. If you take one habit away from this article, make it weighing the pot in your hand before you reach for the watering can.

05 · TEMPERATURE

Cold draughts and chilling injury

Most popular houseplants are tropical or subtropical, and many suffer chilling injury at temperatures well above freezing — often below about 10–13°C, with sensitivity varying by species[5][3]. Cold disrupts cell membrane function directly. The result is characteristic: leaves that drop while still green, or that develop dark, water-soaked-looking patches and then abscise within a few days.

The distribution gives it away. Damage clusters on the side of the plant facing the cold source and on leaves in direct contact with a cold surface. Winter window glass can be many degrees colder than the room, and any leaf pressed against it takes the worst of it. Draughty front doors, single-glazed sash windows, and air-conditioning vents produce the same one-sided pattern. A plant left in a cold car or delivery van for a few hours can drop most of its foliage a week later, with no other explanation available.

Heat sources cause an equivalent problem from the other direction. A plant sitting above a radiator or in the path of forced-air heating experiences a sharp local rise in evaporative demand and a hot, fluctuating root zone. The leaves nearest the source dry, crisp and drop while the rest of the plant looks fine. Both problems are solved the same way: move the plant a foot or two away from the source, and keep it out of the swing between the two.

06 · DISTURBANCE

Transplant shock and repotting

Repotting reliably severs fine roots — the ones that do virtually all the water absorption, since uptake happens through root hairs and young tissue near the tips rather than through the thick structural roots that survive handling. The plant emerges from the operation with an intact canopy and a diminished ability to supply it, and it corrects the imbalance the only way it can: by dropping leaves[6].

Expect some loss within one to two weeks of any repot that disturbed the rootball, and more if you teased roots apart, root-pruned, or bare-rooted the plant. It is usually mild and self-limiting. Support recovery by keeping the mix evenly moist but never sodden, holding off fertiliser for four to six weeks, keeping the plant out of direct sun while it rebuilds, and being patient. Do not compensate by watering more — a plant with fewer working roots uses less water, so the pot dries more slowly than it used to and is easy to overwater into rot.

One avoidable version of this is over-potting. Moving into a container several sizes larger surrounds a small rootball with a large volume of unrooted medium that no roots are drying out, so it stays wet for weeks. That is an ideal setting for root rot, which then produces exactly the leaf drop the repot was meant to cure. Go up one pot size at a time.

07 · THE NORMAL CASE

Natural senescence, and pests

Some leaf loss is simply the plant getting on with its life. Leaves have finite lifespans. As one ages, or becomes shaded by the growth above it, the plant withdraws its mobile nutrients — nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium — and reallocates them to younger, more productive tissue. The leaf yellows evenly, often uniformly across the blade, and eventually detaches[12].

The distinguishing features of normal senescence are that it affects the lowest, oldest, most shaded leaves only; it proceeds one leaf at a time rather than several at once; the rest of the plant looks well and is producing new growth; and the rate is slow — a leaf every few weeks on a healthy specimen. Losing the bottom leaf of a climbing philodendron occasionally is not a problem to solve. Losing four in a fortnight is.

Pests are the last item on the list and the easiest to miss, because the evidence is on the undersides of leaves where nobody looks. Heavy infestations of spider mites, scale, mealybugs or thrips remove enough sap and damage enough tissue to trigger premature abscission, often with stippling, sticky honeydew, sooty mould or fine webbing as corroboration[8]. Turn several leaves over and check the veins and axils with good light before concluding anything about your watering. 08 · WHAT TO DO

A calm response to a dropping plant

Work through it in order. First, lift the pot and feel its weight, then push a finger two inches into the mix. Heavy and wet with lower leaves yellowing means suspect root rot and unpot to confirm. Light and dry with wilting and crisping means rehydrate the rootball with a long soak from below. Second, reconstruct the last month: any move, repot, new heating, opened window or delivery in transit is a strong candidate, especially if the plant is a fig or another woody species.

Third, turn leaves over and look for pests. Fourth — and this is where most people go wrong — change one thing and then wait. Leaf drop is a lagging indicator; the plant is responding to conditions from days or weeks ago, and stacking three interventions at once means you will never know which one mattered, while the plant absorbs three simultaneous disturbances. Stabilise the environment, water on need judged by weight and finger test, and give it four to six weeks.

Your evidence of recovery is new growth, not the leaves you have already lost. Those are gone and will not be replaced in the same positions; a fig that shed its lower canopy stays bare-legged unless you prune to force branching. What you want to see is the plant pushing new leaves within four to eight weeks, and holding onto them. That means whatever it was adjusting to, it has adjusted.
