Why Is My Calathea Getting Brown Edges? A Complete Diagnosis

Why calatheas brown so easily
Calatheas are famously fussy houseplants — their patterned leaves attract owners, but the plants demand conditions that are difficult to provide in average home environments[3]. Brown leaf edges are the most common symptom of the mismatch. The interesting thing about calathea browning is that it has a strongly skewed cause distribution: about half of cases trace to something most owners don’t suspect — tap water chemistry — while only 10% trace to watering frequency, which is where most owners look first.
Calathea species (many recently reclassified as Goeppertia in botanical literature but still commonly sold as Calathea) are native to tropical rainforest understory in Central and South America[4]. They evolved in warm humid environments with soft, mineral-poor rainwater filtered through the canopy. Domestic conditions — central heating, chlorinated tap water, low humidity — are essentially opposite to their evolutionary preferences. Brown edges are the plant’s honest signal that conditions are off.

02 · CAUSE 1
Tap water chemistry — the surprise dominant cause
Roughly half of calathea brown edges trace to tap water chemistry — fluoride, chlorine, chloramine, and dissolved salts. Calatheas are particularly sensitive to these because their thin leaves and rapid transpiration deposit minerals at leaf margins over time[5]. Even water that’s perfectly safe for humans and other houseplants can damage calathea edges.
Fluoride is the most common culprit in US municipal water supplies. Fluoride accumulates in leaf tips and margins, causing progressive brown crispy damage. Chlorine and chloramine (used to disinfect municipal water) damage leaf tissue directly. Dissolved mineral salts (calcium, magnesium, sodium) build up over months of watering and burn leaf edges.
Telltale signs:
- Brown edges appearing gradually over months. Water damage accumulates. Sudden overnight browning is usually not water-related; slow progressive browning across many leaves is.
- Brown edges primarily on leaf tips and margins. Water damage concentrates where transpiration is highest — the tips and edges. Damage in the interior of leaves is usually a different cause.
- New leaves initially healthy, browning over 6–12 months. Diagnostic. New leaves emerge fine and gradually develop edges as water accumulates in them. A plant with lots of brown-edged older leaves and clean new leaves is being water-damaged.
- White crust on soil surface or pot walls. Visible mineral buildup indicates hard water. If you can see it, your calathea is being affected too.
The fix: Switch to filtered, distilled, or rainwater. This is the single most impactful change you can make for a calathea. In order of preference: rainwater (softest, free if you collect it), distilled water (soft, cheap in bulk), reverse-osmosis water (soft, requires filtration system), Brita or similar filtered water (helpful but doesn’t remove fluoride or all minerals), and tap water left uncovered overnight (dissipates chlorine but not fluoride or minerals). 03 · CAUSE 2
Low humidity
Roughly 30% of calathea brown edges are caused by low humidity. Calatheas evolved in 70–90% humidity rainforest understory and struggle below 50%. Average heated indoor air in winter is often 15–25% humidity — devastating for these plants[6].
Telltale signs: Brown edges appearing or worsening in winter (heating season), plant located in a dry area of the home (near heating vents, radiators, or fireplaces), leaves curling in addition to browning, and rapid onset of damage after a change in home conditions.
The fix: Raise humidity around the plant. Options in order of effectiveness: use a room humidifier (target 50–60%), group plants together (transpiration creates a local humid microclimate), use a pebble tray (small effect but non-zero), or move the plant to a naturally humid room like a bathroom. Misting has almost no lasting effect on humidity and shouldn’t be relied on. Damaged leaves won’t recover, but new leaves emerging in improved humidity will be clean.

Inconsistent watering
Calatheas prefer consistently moist soil. Letting them dry out completely between waterings — the standard for most houseplants — produces brown edges within a week or two[7]. Inconsistent watering accounts for about 10% of brown edge cases.
Telltale signs: Brown edges appeared after a period of neglect or missed watering, plant is in a small pot that dries fast, or watering schedule has been inconsistent (weekly one week, three weeks the next). Soil often dry at time of diagnosis.

05 · CAUSE 4
Fertilizer burn
Fertilizing too heavily or too frequently damages calathea leaf edges, particularly during winter when the plant isn’t actively growing. About 5% of brown edge cases trace to this.
Telltale signs: Recently increased fertilization, using full-strength fertilizer, fertilizing during winter, or brown edges appearing after a specific fertilizer application.
The fix: Reduce fertilizer to quarter-strength during the growing season (spring and summer) and stop entirely during winter (November through February). Mineral buildup in soil

Telltale signs: White crust on soil surface, plant has been in same soil for 2+ years, and brown edges persist despite switching to soft water.

07 · PRIORITY ACTION
If you do only one thing
Switch your water source. If you take one thing from this guide, this is it — and it’s the change most calathea owners never make. Tap water damage is by far the most common cause of brown edges, but it’s invisible if you don’t know to look for it because the damage builds up gradually and every water source seems equally “fine.” Buy a gallon of distilled water at the grocery store for a few dollars, use it for 4–8 weeks, and observe whether new leaves emerge clean. Rainwater is the ideal calathea water source if you can collect it. It’s soft, mineral-free, slightly acidic (which calatheas prefer), and free. A small rain barrel positioned under a downspout provides enough water for indoor calatheas for months. In areas without regular rainfall, distilled water is the reliable option.
Reverse osmosis systems (if you already have one for drinking water) also produce excellent calathea water. Standard carbon filters (Brita, PUR) remove chlorine and improve taste but don’t remove fluoride or dissolved minerals — better than tap but not ideal.

What to expect after the fix
Existing brown edges won’t recover. Damaged leaf tissue is dead and won’t re-green. Trim brown edges with clean shears (following the natural leaf shape) or remove badly damaged leaves entirely at the base. This is cosmetic only — the plant is otherwise unaffected.
New leaves will show the improvement. Once you’ve made the appropriate fix (water source, humidity, watering consistency, fertilizer, or repotting), new leaves emerging should be clean-edged. Calatheas produce new leaves every 3–6 weeks during the growing season, so improvement is visible within 1–3 months.
