Below that threshold the plant keeps growing — tomatoes are vigorous — but it puts its resources into stem and leaf rather than flowers, and the fruit that does set ripens slowly and tastes flat.
The reason is straightforward energetics. Solanum lycopersicum is a fast-growing warm-season annual from the sun-drenched western slopes of the Andes, domesticated in Mesoamerica and now the most widely grown home vegetable in the world[4][5]. Fruit is expensive: sugars, acids, and flavor compounds all have to be manufactured by photosynthesis and shipped to the developing tomato. A plant short of light simply cannot fund a full truss, so it aborts flowers and drops fruit to balance the books.
A practical test before you plant: watch the intended spot across a full day in early summer and count the hours the sun actually lands there. Do it in leaf, not in early spring — a bed that gets eight hours in April may get four once the neighboring maple leafs out. Tomatoes thrive in full sun, tolerate the top of the "some direct" range with reduced yield, and are simply not viable anywhere in the bright-indirect or low-light zones[2][6]. There is no shade-tolerant tomato variety, whatever a seed catalogue suggests: cherry types and some determinate bush varieties cope marginally better with five or six hours, but they still want more.
Can a tomato get too much light? Almost never in terms of hours — but heat that rides along with intense sun is a different matter. Sustained daytime temperatures above about 90°F, or nights above 75°F, cause blossom drop and poor pollination regardless of how good the light is, and exposed fruit on an over-pruned plant can develop sunscald. Beyond aspect, three siting details make a real difference. Spacing: crowded tomatoes shade one another, so give indeterminate plants 24–36 inches and keep rows running north–south so both sides get light through the day. Height: taller crops such as corn, beans, or a trellis of squash on the south side of the bed will steal hours you did not budget for. A shaded tomato does not die — it just quietly fails to produce, which makes the diagnosis easy to miss until harvest time[8]:
- Few flowers and fewer fruit. The defining symptom. A big healthy-looking plant carrying only a handful of tomatoes is almost always short of light — the plant funds foliage first and fruit only with surplus energy.
- Leggy, sprawling growth with long internodes. Wide bare gaps between leaves and a stem too thin to hold itself up. The plant is stretching for light rather than building a fruiting frame.
- Slow, uneven ripening and pale, bland fruit. Sugars and flavor compounds are photosynthesis products; short of light, fruit sits green for weeks and ripens to a watery, flat taste.

Excess light is rarely the problem on its own, but intense sun combined with high heat produces a recognizable set of symptoms[6][9]:
- Sunscald on fruit. Pale, papery, sunken patches on the shoulders of exposed tomatoes, most common on heavily pruned plants or after a hard defoliation. Leave enough canopy to shade the trusses.
- Blossom drop in a heat wave. Flowers yellow and fall without setting when days exceed roughly 90°F or nights stay above 75°F. This is a temperature problem, not a light problem — use shade cloth through the peak, not a shadier site.
- Midday wilting in moist soil. Intense sun drives transpiration past what the roots can supply. If the plant recovers by evening the roots are fine; it is a sign to mulch and deepen the watering, not to move the plant.
- Blossom end rot from erratic uptake. Hot, high-light conditions swing soil moisture wildly, and that inconsistency disrupts calcium delivery to the developing fruit — the classic sunken black patch on the blossom end.

How light drives tomato growth, fruit set, and flavor
Fruit is the most expensive thing a tomato plant does. Every tomato has to be filled with sugars, organic acids, carotenoids, and volatile flavor compounds, all of them ultimately assembled from carbon fixed by the leaves. When light is plentiful the plant can support a full truss on every node; when it is scarce, the plant sheds flowers and aborts small fruit to match supply to demand[10]. That is the mechanism behind the plainest rule in tomato growing: fewer hours of sun means fewer tomatoes.
Light also shapes the plant itself. In full sun tomatoes build thick, self-supporting stems with short internodes and a dense fruiting frame. In shade the same variety produces the tall, floppy, sparse growth gardeners describe as leggy — and because staking cannot add energy, a leggy plant stays a low-yielding plant.
Ripening deserves a clarification. Red color development is driven mainly by temperature, not by sun falling directly on the fruit — lycopene production slows above about 85°F, which is why tomatoes in a scorching spell can hang orange for days. This is why aggressive leaf-stripping "to let the sun in on the fruit" backfires: it does not speed ripening, and it exposes fruit to sunscald while removing the very leaves generating the sugars.

Variety type interacts with light as well. Determinate bush tomatoes set their crop over a short window and can make reasonable use of a six-hour site; indeterminate vines keep producing until frost and reward every extra hour of sun with another truss. Small-fruited cherry types such as ‘Sungold’ and ‘Sweet Million’ are the most forgiving in marginal light, while large beefsteaks and long-season heirlooms are the least — they need both the hours and the heat to finish.

Tomato seedlings are the stage where light most often goes wrong.
