Its very thin, soft, hairy leaves are built to harvest weak filtered light efficiently — and they have no defence against the intensity of unfiltered sun through glass.

A note on which Streptocarpus you have, because it changes the placement slightly. The familiar florist plants derive from rosette species like S. rexii: they form a flat cluster of long strap leaves with flower stalks rising from the leaf bases. Distance from the window matters as much as direction. Indoor light falls off sharply with distance, so a Streptocarpus on a north sill and the same plant six feet into the room are in very different light levels — the first flowers, the second usually does not. Flowering is metabolically expensive, and a Streptocarpus only funds it when photosynthesis produces a surplus.
