What you need: A healthy pothos plant, clean sharp scissors or pruning shears, a clear glass jar or vase, and room-temperature filtered water (tap water works in most areas; avoid heavily chlorinated municipal supply).
Step 1 — Take the cutting. Identify a healthy stem with several nodes. Make the cut just below a node (about ¼ inch below) using clean shears. Each cutting should be 4–6 inches long with at least 2–3 nodes and 2–3 leaves. Remove any leaves that would be submerged in water — submerged leaves rot and contaminate the water.
Step 2 — Place in water. Submerge the bare lower stem (with at least one node fully underwater) in the jar. The remaining leaves should be above the waterline. Use enough water to cover at least one node, but don’t fully submerge the cutting — the upper leaves need to stay dry.
Step 3 — Position the cutting. Place the jar in bright indirect light. Direct sunlight overheats the water and encourages algae; deep shade slows root development. East or north-facing windows work well.
Step 4 — Change the water weekly. Refresh with clean room-temperature water every 5–7 days to prevent bacterial growth. Cloudy water indicates contamination — change it immediately.

What you need: A healthy pothos plant, clean sharp scissors, a 4-inch nursery pot with drainage holes, well-draining potting mix (standard houseplant mix amended with 20–25% perlite), and optionally rooting hormone powder (helpful but not necessary for pothos).
Step 1 — Take the cutting. Same as for water propagation. 4–6 inch cutting with at least 2–3 nodes, made just below a node with clean shears.
