Buy a plant labelled Hedera helix and you are buying a climber that spent millions of years learning to read light. Nothing else about its care changes as much as the spot you choose for it. A Hedera helix does its best work in a spot that stays clearly bright from morning to late afternoon without the sun ever landing directly on the leaves — think a metre or so inside an east-facing window, or right beside a north-facing one[1][3]. In that band the stems stay short between leaves, the plant branches instead of running, and cream or gold markings hold their contrast.
Below that, the plant does not die — it economises. Medium light produces a slower, looser plant; genuinely dim corners produce a sparse one that adds a leaf every few weeks and gradually turns plain green. Both are survival, not health. Above that band, unfiltered midday sun through window glass is simply too much energy for foliage adapted to shade, and the leaf tissue burns.
Why so tolerant at the low end and so touchy at the high end? Look at where the species lives. Hedera helix is a woodland climber of western and central Europe that germinates in leaf litter under a closed canopy and hauls itself up trunks and walls with adhesive rootlets, spending its whole juvenile life in filtered shade[4][15]. Then account for the second variable everyone forgets: how far the plant sits from the glass. A quick field test — hold your hand a foot above the foliage at midday. A crisp, hard-edged shadow means direct sun is reaching the leaves; a soft grey shadow means bright indirect; barely any shadow means the spot is dimmer than it feels.
04 · TOO LITTLE LIGHT
What a light-starved Hedera helix looks like
Low-light decline in Hedera helix is gradual rather than dramatic, which is why it often goes unnoticed for months. These four changes are the tell[7]:
- Bare, running stems. The gaps between leaves stretch until the plant is more stem than foliage. In a shaded woodland that reaching behaviour finds a tree trunk; in a living room it just produces a sparse, straggly plant.
- Variegation draining away. Cultivars such as 'Glacier', 'Gold Child' and 'Buttercup' put out progressively greener leaves as the light drops, because pale tissue carries little or no chlorophyll and the plant cannot afford it in the dark. The pattern goes first, and it goes quietly.
- A stalled plant with shrinking leaves. Each new leaf comes out a little smaller than the one before, and weeks pass between them. A Hedera helix that has not visibly changed since spring is telling you about its light.
- Bare knees at the base. Interior and lower leaves are shed first as the plant concentrates what energy it has in the growing tips, leaving a naked crown and a few long runners.

All four reverse, but only on new growth. Move the plant brighter, cut the bare runners back hard to force branching, and judge the result by the leaves that emerge afterwards — the stretched ones will never shorten.

Indoors, the danger is not sunlight as such but sunlight concentrated through glass with no air movement to carry the heat away. A Hedera helix on a sunny sill shows it within days[5]:
- Bleached, papery patches. Cream or straw-coloured areas appear on the leaf faces angled toward the window, usually thinning to a dry papery texture. This is destroyed tissue and it never re-greens.
- Scorched margins on variegated types. White and cream sectors have no pigment shielding them, so a variegated Hedera helix browns along its pale edges long before a plain green one shows any damage at all.
- A dull, olive cast over the whole plant. Excess light degrades chlorophyll faster than the plant rebuilds it, so deep green fades to a tired yellow-green even where there is no obvious burn.
- Wilting by afternoon plus a spider mite outbreak. Hot, bright, dry sills push water demand beyond what the roots can supply and create exactly the conditions spider mites prefer — fine stippling and webbing on a sun-baked ivy is a very common pairing.

A variegated leaf is a compromise the plant can only afford in good light.
