Aglaonema Light Requirements: A Guide to Low-Light Growing

If you have a corner so dim that everything you have put in it has quietly given up, the plant to try next is an aglaonema. Very few houseplants genuinely earn the "low light" label — most merely survive it — but Aglaonema (widely sold as Chinese evergreen; same genus, different name on the tag) is one of the handful that will hold its shape and colour in conditions that would leave a fiddle-leaf fig bare. The catch is that aglaonema light requirements vary sharply by cultivar, and the gap between a plain dark green form and a hot pink one is wider than most people expect. This guide sets out how much light an aglaonema actually needs, cultivar by cultivar[1][2].

Aglaonema light requirements in one line: low to medium indirect light, and no direct sun. It is one of the most shade-tolerant houseplants available. Dark green cultivars cope with the least light of any common foliage plant; variegated, silver, red, and pink types need noticeably brighter indirect light to keep their colour. Direct sun scorches all of them.

01 · THE SIMPLE ANSWER

How much light does an aglaonema need?

An aglaonema needs low to medium indirect light — and unlike most plants sold with that description, it means it. A dark green cultivar will hold steady in a spot several metres from the nearest window, in a north-facing room, or under nothing but overhead office lighting for ten hours a day[1][3]. Give it medium indirect light instead and it grows faster and fuller, but it does not require that to look well.

The single hard rule is at the other end: no direct sun. Aglaonema is a genus of understory aroids from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and New Guinea, where they grow in deep, permanent shade beneath a closed canopy[4]. Their broad, thin leaves are built to harvest scarce filtered light efficiently, and they have essentially no protection against the intensity of unfiltered sunlight. An hour of midday sun on a windowsill produces bleached patches that never recover.

Where cultivar matters is in the middle of the range. A plain deep-green form such as the classic 'Maria' sits at the very bottom of the light spectrum. Silver-marked types like 'Silver Bay' or 'Silver Queen' want a step more. And the modern red and pink hybrids — 'Siam Aurora', 'Red Valentine', 'Pink Dalmatian' — have the highest demand of all, because so little of their leaf surface is functional green tissue.

Two things stand out. First, the band starts unusually far to the left: aglaonema is comfortable in genuinely low light, not merely tolerant of it, which is why it is a fixture in shopping centres, hotel lobbies, and windowless offices[2]. Second, it stops before the bright end entirely. There is no version of this plant that wants a sunny sill.

Position your own plant within that band by cultivar. Deep green forms live happily at the left edge; silver and white-marbled types belong in the middle; red, pink, and heavily variegated hybrids should sit at the right-hand edge of the band, in the brightest indirect light you can find that is still out of the sun's path[5].

03 · LIGHT BY WINDOW

The best window and placement for aglaonema light

Because aglaonema tolerates so much shade, window choice is less about finding enough light and more about avoiding too much. Ratings below assume the Northern Hemisphere — swap north and south if you are south of the equator[6]:

Worth knowing: how far a window's light actually reaches into a room drops off far more steeply than it looks to your eye, because your vision adapts and a light meter does not. The useful consequence for aglaonema owners is the reverse of the usual advice — you can put this plant somewhere that seems too dark and be pleasantly surprised, provided you also dial back the watering to match.

04 · TOO LITTLE LIGHT

Signs your aglaonema needs more light

Shade tolerance is not infinite. Even an aglaonema has a floor, and these are the four symptoms that it has dropped below it[7]:

  • Pink and red pigment draining away. The clearest early signal on coloured cultivars. New leaves emerge with progressively less of the pink or red and more plain green, until a 'Siam Aurora' is barely distinguishable from a green form.
  • Leaning and lopsided growth. A clumping plant that has started tilting bodily toward the window is short of light. Quarter-turn the pot each week to keep it symmetrical, but also consider moving it closer.
  • Growth that has effectively stopped. A healthy aglaonema pushes out a few new leaves each season. If nothing has unfurled in six months and the plant is otherwise fine, the light is the limiting factor.
  • Soil that stays wet for weeks. The most dangerous of the four. Low light suppresses water use, and the resulting permanently damp pot is the leading cause of aglaonema deaths — the light problem becomes a root rot problem.

05 · TOO MUCH LIGHT

Signs your aglaonema is getting too much light

Excess light damages an aglaonema faster than any amount of shade ever will, and the marks are permanent[5]:

  • Dry, bleached blotches in the middle of the leaf. Sunburn, and it appears wherever the beam lands rather than at the edges. Tan or straw-coloured, papery to the touch, and it will not green up again.
  • A grey, dusty cast over the whole plant. Chronic overexposure degrades chlorophyll faster than it is replaced, leaving the foliage looking dulled and faded rather than deep and glossy.
  • Downward-curling leaf blades. The leaf rolls to reduce the surface exposed to the beam — a stress response you will see within days of moving a plant into a sunny window.
  • Sudden, uncharacteristic thirst. An aglaonema that normally goes a week or more between waterings and is now dry in three days has almost certainly been moved into far too much light.

The correction takes seconds: step the plant out of the sun's path, or hang a sheer across the window. Scorched leaves stay scorched and can be trimmed away at the base, but fresh growth comes through undamaged once the exposure stops.

06 · LIGHT & LEAF

How light drives aglaonema leaf colour

The reason cultivar matters so much comes down to accounting. Silver, cream, white, red, and pink areas of an aglaonema leaf contain little or no chlorophyll and therefore contribute almost nothing to the plant's energy budget — they are a cost, carried by the remaining green tissue. In reasonable light that cost is affordable. In deep shade it is not, and the plant responds by producing successive leaves with more green and less pattern[2][8].

That gives you a practical hierarchy to place by. 'Maria' and other deep green forms have a full complement of working tissue and can be sited almost anywhere. 'Silver Bay' and 'Silver Queen', with heavy silver marbling, want medium indirect light to stay bright. The red and pink hybrids, where colour can cover most of the blade, sit at the top of the demand list — and they are the ones people most often complain have "gone green" after a few months in a dark hallway.

One nuance worth holding on to: fading is not damage. A pink aglaonema that has greened up in a dim room is perfectly healthy and will resume producing coloured leaves within a couple of growth cycles once you move it somewhere brighter. Unlike sunburn, this one is fully reversible — it just takes new leaves rather than repaired ones.

07 · GROW LIGHTS & SEASONS

Grow lights, windowless rooms, and the seasonal swing

Aglaonema is the classic candidate for a room with no natural light at all, and it needs remarkably little help. A small LED grow light run 10–12 hours a day at 18–24 inches above the canopy is comfortably enough for a green cultivar, and a slightly closer or stronger fixture keeps a pink one coloured[6][9]. In many offices the existing ceiling lighting, left on through the working day, is already doing the job unassisted.

Seasonally, the plant asks for less adjustment than most. Winter's shorter, weaker days slow growth to a near halt, but a shade-adapted plant notices that less than a light-hungry one does. What does change is the low winter sun angle, which can send a beam much deeper into a room than in summer — so a spot that was safely sunless in July can develop a bright patch by January. Check where the light actually falls at midwinter, and move plants gradually rather than abruptly when you do relocate them.

Match watering to your aglaonema light level

For this plant in particular, light and water are the same decision. Aglaonema's greatest vulnerability is overwatering, and the reason people overwater it is precisely that they put it somewhere dark and then keep to a bright-room schedule. In a dim corner the plant photosynthesises slowly, transpires slowly, and can leave the pot damp for two or three weeks — more than long enough for the roots to suffocate.
